We moved across town (not across the state). We made a giant spreadsheet of all options, called for info, and narrowed down the 5 we were most interested in and toured. Afterwards, we picked our favorite.

However, we ended up not liking the place we picked (too much turnover), BUT we had toured so many places that we had a better idea of what our options were when it came time to make a change.

@Kemma: I have done that and poked around, but you know how daycares go, there always be someone who LOVED it and someone who HATED it...

I narrowed down my list based on a certification status that seemed to set the schools apart. Then I visited their websites and narrowed my list to six. Using a checklist my dad toured them. DH and I weighed his feedback and the checklist and did our own separate tours of the one we thought was the best fit. We had already moved to the area when I was able to tour the daycare.

My husband (whose job we were moving for) took a day of pto to visit places and reported back. We discussed and picked without me ever having seen it. We were lucky in that it was a great fit! We were also about 5 hours away from our new location. Good luck!

Is there a local Mum's group on FB that you could join and ask? In my limited experience there's usually one of two good centres that keep cropping up in conversation.

@runnerd: My company had an on-site daycare that was highly recommended by employees so I toured the facility when we came for a house hunting trip.

DS was 5 months old when we moved - I had 30 days to find a DCP before DH started working. I asked co-workers and then toured 3 centers - We were waitlisted for the one I wanted and luck was on our side and a spot opened up at the last minute so we took it =)

Good luck!

@runnerd: If you can make it work to do tours I would absolutely do that! Good luck! Sounds like you have much better options than me. I was also moving across the country, from DC! and had zero time to make a trip. We moved really quickly and it was crazy. But like I said, it's all good now. I'm sure you'll do fine. Keep me in the loop!

@Mrs. Pajamas: ooo that's my fear, making a terrible pick, but really it's often a roll of the dice if it's seems great. It's about a 4.5 hour drive so I can do a weekday trip if needed but I don't have a lot of PTO :/

Luckily most places do have an opening, although when I originally got info, I thought we'd be moving 3 months later than now.

@runnerd: ugh I did this about 6 months ago and unfortunately it was super stressful and we only found one place with an opening that was a terrible fit for my dd. But I moved to the sf Bay area which has a crazy competitive market for daycare. I found nurturelist.com super helpful plus local mom Facebook group that I joined before moving. I couldn't do tours ahead of the move...I ended up taking a few weeks off of work to get everything in order. Do you have that option? Where are you moving? Do you know of openings and are just trying to narrow down your choices? I hope so for your sake! Let me know if you have other questions and good luck! It's not easy to move with kids!! But we survived and are super happy now in a new, much better preschool for my dd.

If you were moving out of state, how did you pick a daycare? Did you take off work so you could travel to new city on a weekday and do tours prior to your move?

At this point, I have a comprehensive spreadsheet of all daycare options and info I have gathered online and via phone calls.
