We did a multistate move when Lala was four months and then we moved houses when M was 8 months and Lala was 2.5. There is no ideal time to move and I feel like its always possible to make a move, especially if it's going to be good for the family.

@Espion: trying to think of more productive helpful things - having all utility, Internet etc set up in advance and all the numbers for easy reference was useful. Planning out meals for the first month was helpful. Researching where we'd go for pediatrician, etc was all better done ahea of time so I wasn't googling frantically the first time we had an issue. My other tip would be to buy the bare minimum of stuff to move ahead of one and use amazon two day shipping for everything else.

Oh, lol, and I just realized I didn't really answer your question. When we actually moved, Deere Boy was 6 months old and we packed up a 20-foot snowmobile trailer and pulled all our junk out with us, taking 3 days to make the drive. He was a good baby and didn't mind riding in his seat all that way and when we got to our new house, I don't remember unpacking being a real struggle. We didn't really have that much stuff anyways, lol, and we were moving into a WAY bigger place than what we'd been living in before.

We did.a 10+ hour move in December. Our daughter was 30 months and our son was 9 months. It wasn't that bad, but I would say our biggest challange was both of the kids regressing a bit in their sleep. We also had a really tight timeline (only about a month notification), which did make it stressful. I think it's much easier to move with an infant than an older child, though. DS adjusted to our move very quickly, but DD still talks a lot about our old location and her friends. I know she misses them quite a bit, even 6 months later.

Yes, we did this. Moved 1,700 miles from where Farmer Man grew up and all his family lives (and some of mine) and where we lived a quarter mile down the road from his folks and his other married brother. It was a huge leap and faith and totally worth it, but there are long-term things to consider. A biggie for me is a lack of childcare. I have made a lot of good friends in the last 4 years and really am finding my niche here, but there's no one like family to call up and ask if you can drop the kids off for a few hours (and for free, no less). There's just no one like family when asking for help, PERIOD. I didn't ask for help from my friends when I should have with my second baby (the first baby after our move) and it sucked, was an extremely difficult postpartum period. With this third baby, I'm seriously considering flying one of my sisters out to help me for a month postpartum.
Anyways, I would never move back to where we came from and I really don't want to be anywhere else, but the distance and isolation can be tough. Weigh your priorities. For us, family is very important, it was extremely hard to make the decision to move so far away, but it came down to us deciding what kind of life we wanted to give our own children and that was nowhere near possible where we used to live. And I'm not talking about making the money to give them a better life, there was a host of things we want to give them that we couldn't even consider there.

We will be moving 13 hours away in a year, and LO will be around 17 months. Not looking forward to it at all, but it is unavoidable.

@MSBartlett: We' re actually moving from Georgia to Alaska! So it is truly a no joke move and it is not for the military. We've been packing for the last few months, making sure that everything is indexed. (I keep a word file of box contents and number the boxes on the outside. It is time intensive, but with a baby in tow, it is going to be nicer to selectively unpack rather than tear through 80 boxes looking for a cookie sheet.)
We're also using a moving company. You can opt for them to pack your stuff, but it is more expensive. They will do an in-house consultation and provide you with a quote. We had four different services survey our stuff for quotes. They will also generally move vehicles for a set fee. Depending on how far your move is, not driving may be well worth the extra cost.

The goal is to hop on a plane and have our stuff meet us there a few weeks later. We figure on buying a few temporary things (i.e. paper plates) but lugging much of the necessary baby gear along with us.

We moved when LO was 4 weeks ish and it was awful. A lot of my challenges were exacerbated by postpartum complications and recovery.. Even though we had professional movers from DHs job it was just one more thing on top of another to deal with setting up a new home and not knowing where stuff had been put away. We moved about five hours away to a different state.

My mom came and stayed with us for a week which was great
Because she cooked and helped unpack and clean.

@espion Please let me know how it goes! Where are you moving from and moving to? How are you moving all your stuff? We are in early stages of planning our move and it would be nice to hear how someone else did it!

The only experience I have is moving my 13 month old (now 16 month old) and my newborn (now 3 months old) across town into a new house. It was roughest for my eldest since he hadn't seen me in days (in hospital, giving birth), we had a new baby on the scene and he had a new house to run around in.

How old would your LO be?

My DH and I are starting to make plans to move out of state. Like a 24 hour drive away and not just crossing the border sort of way. In addition we are TTC and will most likely have a LO by the time the move happens.

Have you ever moved with a LO? How old were they and what were some of the biggest challenges you had?

Thanks!
