I went with a hospital and practice that was 10 mins from my work for my first baby. All of my appts were early morning and I was at my desk by 9:30 or 10a every time. It was awesome. I was an hour from home and in the end it didn't matter as I didn't end up delivering at that hospital anyway. (A story for another time) Stay with who you are with is my advice.

Thanks so much for sharing your experiences - I am definitely leaning the same way. I think I'll still tour both though, just in case.

i would stay. my obgyn is about 10 min from my work and 30 min from where i live. and its just so convenient for it to be close to work so i can just go really quick to the appt and come back to work. otherwise i'd have to take the morning or afternoon off. and also, the private suites sound nice! i def won't want to share a room during labor or during recovery! it'd be nice to have your own bathroom and everything.

Without traffic, I live 35 minutes away from work; on a Friday afternoon, it can take 2 hours.
I chose an OB and a hospital near my office. I was really glad that I could be out of the office for less than 90 minutes door-to-door on appointment days, and it was a nicer hospital than anything close to my house. Yeah, it meant I was in the car for longer when I was in labor, but I had plenty of time (I was in labor for 20 hours, so it's not like there was a rush to get there before having the baby in the car), plus my water broke at 10 PM, so no traffic :)
I'd make the same decision again.

@jholler25: West Boca Medical is the "good" hospital in Boca and advertises two private princess suites that are available at a nominal fee. Elsewhere I have read that the other rooms are shared. I should probably confirm that, maybe I'm mistaken.

Memorial Regional has 39 suites and doesn't mention anything about a fee.

I guess I should take a tour of each and start from there.

I voted stay, I wouldn't want to share a room when you have visitors, and what not coming and going! (or the other people do!)

@April_Showers: Thats a good suggestion. I should probably do a tour of each and see which seems like a better fit.

BOCA makes you share rooms??? Wth? That's the most elite city down here!!! I didn't vote, I'm still pondering it. But my first thought was that there have got to be a lot of really nice OB offices in BR, and that the hospital seems like it would be really nice! I can't get over sharing rooms!

My big focus is the hospital- I am very glad we picked one of the better hospitals with a good NICU, because we ended up using it. Much better than being transferred to another hospital.

Also shared rooms? No way for me, having a private room was key for me while sorting out breastfeeding and having a brand new crying baby. I can't imagine having another patient in the same room with all of our chaos!

I would stick with my current doctor. Even if I wasn't 100% in love. But to me the private rooms in the hospital and being close to work are more important for me. When I was looking for an OBGYN, I started by researching the hospitals in the area. Once I picked that, I looked for a doctor that had privledges there.

You have to do what you feel most comfortable with. See if you can go for some meet and greets or hospital tours to see if that makes up your mind. One hospital may be more in line with how you want your birth to go.

like you i am not all that attached to my obgyn and would def at least browse the new home neighborhood for ones that i might better click with...

i chose my doctor/hosp because it's 5 min from our house (labor) and i have a flex job that allows me to wfh on dr appt days. so that was my key factor as far as prox to work or home.

however, previously my old obgyn (not pregnant) was only 5 min from work and was nice that i didnt have to take sick days for doc appts and could use my lunch hour without being noticed!

i can see it both ways; id just weigh out what's more important to you and then choose to find a new one or stick with your current!

Excuse my long winded post. I have a dilemma.

I currently live in one town (Plantation) and work about 20 minutes away in another (Hollywood).

When I chose my doctor, I was in a rush but knew I wanted one near work so that it would be easier to get away for doctors appointments without anyone noticing. My doctors office is about 5 minutes from work and has been working out great. I don't love the doctor - Just don't really connect with him, but I love his staff and the Perinatologist that he uses.

We just sold our condo and will be moving in 2 weeks to Boca Raton - which is about 45 minutes during traffic to my doctor/hospital. I am still working in Hollywood where my doctor is, so doctors appointments are still convenient. I'm just worried though about going into labor at my new home.

Should I switch DR's?
If so, should I do it now or later?

Hollywood - Pro's
Already familiar with my history
Great Hospital with Private Suites
Nice Staff
Close to work
Joe Dimaggio NICU attached

Hollywood - Con's
Don't love doctor
Potential 45 minute drive while in labor

Boca Raton - Pro's
Close to home for when I go into labor
Maybe find a doctor I click with

Boca Raton - Con's
Unfamiliar with my history
Far from work for routine appointments
Shared rooms in hospital

Have any of you switched doctors? Is 45 minutes too far to be driven while in labor?
