I had a 1 month overlap (conveniently when I was furloughed at work). What I did was for the first week I got the new house ready (floors redone and cleaned) and packed 90% of the new house. Weeks 2-3 I painted the new house and moved stuff into the rooms that were done. We moved heavy furnature that weekend. Week 4 I unpacked and cleaned the old house. Depending on how much work you have to do, I definitely recommend the slow move.

@Iced Tea: it's so much easier than writing "bedroom" 20 times..... and for whoever helps you move, they most likely don't know the difference between all the rooms!

I just bought colored packing tape on Amazon.

Other moving tips I loved: styrofoam plates in between breakable plates, bubble frame mailers for picture frames, and color coded tape to denote which room each box is for.

We started packing unnecessary items about 2 months before our move. Off the top of my head: seasonal clothing, decor, picture frames, rarely iused entertaining items, books, extra toiletries, etc. Once we closed, we had 10 days until official moving day. During that 10 days we brought all the aforementioned items over, one trip per day. I think it helped a bunch, especially bc our friends and family helped us move, no movers.

We are having it professionally cleaned before we move anything, and I will inspect it. Twice we've been told a place was professionally cleaned before move-in, only to find it was not in acceptable condition to unpack (dirty cabinets, etc.).

My preference is to not live there until everything is unpacked and arranged, but my 3 year old is SO excited about the move, that I may eventually give up on the idea. The new house has an amazing fenced yard, whereas our current home has only a patio!

@LCTBQE: That does sound like a realtor that is worth their price. I mean, at the end of the day, a lot of people will just move in and not see the dirt, but some people will do as much as they can before they move in. We took 6 weeks between the closing and moving in to do all the floors, rip up carpet, paint the whole house. Even though we had an in town move, we moved in one day, with movers and full truck.

I've learned if you don't do it at that time, it's not going to get done, at least in our family. My husband can deal with renos if he's not living in it, but he can't when he's here.

@Iced Tea: we tried this once and I find that gradual moves are the worst. I think its got to be quick like ripping off a band aid. Atleast for the major things you use regularly.

Also as general advice I've heard it recommended a TON to have any painting or floor refinishing done before you move in and unpack--we weren't able to do it 1) because of timing and 2) because I just kind of needed to be in the space to see what colors I want. But if you can pull that off it would probably make settling in so easy!

@agold: I don't think it was a typical courtesy, but our sellers were nice people who were in a really unusual and bad situation and we had made some concessions to them on pushing back our move-in date to try to help them out a little (the wife was in the ICU with something absolutely awful and the husband was out of the country on business AND they have a toddler and I think their extended family/friends moved them out). but their selling agent was just super profesh and when the realtors did the walk-through with my husband the day before our movers were to come, she was like, no, this isn't how we do it here, sorry about this--and she hired her own house cleaners to come. they charge $150 so kinnnnddd of a drop in the bucket after the commissions they just made. it made us feel really taken care of and now I'd totally recommend that realtor to anyone who will listen. plus her cleaners did an awesome job and we ended up hiring them to be our regular ladies, so it worked out well all around. but yeah, regardless I'd never do it another way now, you just cannot unpack or put down rugs on a dirty floor, etc.

@Iced Tea: I'm in the course of moving so I'm going to follow this thread because I'm planning the same kind of slow move type thing. I think it makes sense with kids and busy work schedules. I'm also moving just a mile away from my current house. I'm hiring movers just to move a few large, heavy or awkward items. I hope it works for both of us!

@LCTBQE: I agree about having the place professionally cleaned before moving in. I've never heard of a seller's agent supplying the cleaners, though. Was this something you worked out in your purchase agreement, or is it some kind of standard common courtesy in your area?

Yes slow move was much much better for us than the one day move we did, both with kids. It was just less stress because moving day with the truck was only big furniture and all the little boxes were already taken care of.

My experience with a slow move has been similar to @Aria: - just felt like more trouble than t was worth when we already had to spend money on movers for the big stuff. But, part of that was DH being a horrible packer and planner and moving from two apartments to one.
For our recent move we did have a bunch of stuff we planned to move ourselves- like dishes that we could handle more carefully than movers would. So things like that I think makes sense. But don’t drive yourself insane.

We did this! We were temporarily living with my parents (for 10 months) while our house was getting built and when it was ready, we slowly moved in. My LO was 2.5 at the time. After we got our keys, we spent the day cleaning the house (wiping down the construction dust, airing out the newly painted smell, etc). Because it was a new construction there was a lot of work to do beforehand ourselves that we opted to do like installing fans, installing blinds, garage doors, toilet paper and towel holders, etc. Then we slowly started moving our stuff in from storage and from what we were using at my parents. We did hire movers to do all of our big stuff like appliances, beds, boxes, etc. After the big stuff move, we were planning on staying at the new house but we had a hiccup with our new fridge and it wouldn't be delivered for another 3 weeks. So back we went to my parents. It was actually a blessing because I was able to take that 3 weeks to unpack (I hate unpacking) and organize things the way I wanted to. LO came and was able to slowly ease into that it was her house. She had been sleeping still in the crib in the same bedroom at my parents but we got new furniture for her room and when we moved we left the crib at my parents (temporarily) so she knew she was moving up into big girl bed.

It worked out well. drove my mom crazy though...she kept asking why we weren't moving out yet :silly:

@Iced Tea: this is not your question and you may have already been planning to, but just want to encourage you to have your new place professionally cleaned before you start bringing stuff over. we just bought a house and moved in May, and our sellers (they honestly couldn't help this so we weren't mad) had left the house dirty--it is *impossible* to unpack your kitchen into someone else's crumby gross pantry etc. I spent the first day just cleaning the kitchen and unpacking that, then a couple days later the selling agent finally was able to send her cleaners over, they did a great job, and we were able to unpack in earnest. It was a pain and I wish they'd just come before we ever showed up--would have been easier for them to do their job, too.

@justjules: Thanks! That’s really helpful!

I’m definitely leaning toward the slow move. It would be nice not needing to carefully pack dishes and then wash upon unpacking, for example. I will be driving by the house every day anyway, so it makes sense to drop stuff off.

We didn’t have an option for our last move, we had one day and my husband worked. And I had a toddler and was pregnant. We hired movers and it was great! Everything done in one day and as soon as boxes were brought in my mom and I unpacked. We were box free within a couple days. Mostly thanks to my mom and her inability to sit still, lol.

We did this for our last move when we had a month overlap between our rental lease being up once we already closed on our house. It was pre-kids, so I was able to get a lot more packed and moved gradually than I think I could manage as easily now. But I’d still be inclined to try it like this again if we moved locally because I loved being able to get stuff organized by room as I moved it into the house a little at a time, rather than getting everything in at once. Basically, we moved everything except furniture, heavy stuff, and books ourselves in small batches and had movers do the rest at the end.

We just did this. It did not go well unfortunately. It was super confusing for our 3 yr old when half her stuff was at the old place and half was at the new place. Constantly going back and forth was very upsetting for her. It also took us a million more trips in the car than anticipated, but we have a smallish car. It just wasn’t worth the time driving back and forth and loading and unloading a million times. I wish we had just sucked it up and done it all in one day with one big truck. If you do decide to do it, I’d make sure you have enough boxes for all your stuff. We had the foolish idea of only using a limited number of boxes and then unpacking them at the new place and bringing them back. This ended up being a giant hassle and messy because we had no place to put the stuff with no furniture. Good luck with whichever you decide! Moving with kids is stressful!

We did something similar with our last move. The new place was close to our old home, so we booked a truck to come for our heavier boxes and larger furniture but for the two weeks before it was scheduled to come, we moved clothing, lighter boxes and more fragile items. It worked well and made things a little less stressful when the actual moving weekend came.

We are moving to another house, but I’m not sure how to approach it. It’s only about 8 minutes away and on the way to my LO’s preschool. We will have access to the new house one month before we have to be out of this one.

I’m tempted to box things up and move them gradually, dropping them off when I’m going to and from preschool. We could hire a truck and guys just to move the furniture in one go at some point. Is this crazy?

I guess I’m hoping it will be less overwhelming. I get so anxious with packing and moving. Plus, breakage by movers. Has anyone done this?
