@Espion: LOL! Black trash bags sound really good right about now too! We're not military but are going through the same steps as what a military family would go through to move. From what I hear it's usually a pretty smooth move with some damage to our things so expect that.

Wow, that's a lot going on at one time! Sending you some smooth moving vibes as well! Congrats, btw! You're almost there. :)

@erwoo: While I can offer no tips, I understand completely where you are coming from. By the end of June we are selling our house, having a baby, moving to Alaska from Georgia, and DH has military training for two weeks of it. We're thisclose to "throwing everything into black garbage bags".

So here's to some smooth moving vibes!

@runsyellowlites: @looch: Sorry for the late reply. It's been a crazy week with the in-laws here in our messy house.

@runsyellowlites: Thanks for the referral. I'll definitely reach out to her soon.

@looch: Yeah, I'm trying to keep it simple but there are things that we need all the time that I'm trying to include in our shipments since some of these things are really expensive to get there. We're pretty lucky in that we didn't have to find a place and that it's fully furnished; and we have the option to remove furniture we don't need or like if we wanted to. It's just sorting through things and not getting much response when we ask about what's going on with the move is the most frustrating thing now. One question we asked b/c they said that we are allowed excess baggage and their response is "just don't go overboard." What does that mean?? Vague answers just doesn't fly with me during these stressful times. My husband doesn't even have his plane ticket yet and he's leaving in three weeks after he come back from training. I guess they don't care to save money? I gave them dates for us so we'll see when they'll get around to getting our tickets. I need to find out b/c our dog will be quarantined after we get there so we need to make the reservation to ensure she gets a spot. So it's things that like that's been frustrating. I can't wait to be moved and settled so we can enjoy living there.

I'm a generally organized person so seeing the house in disarray and thing everywhere is driving me nuts. And having my in-laws here for the last week has been a blessing (help with watching the kids) and stressful (meal planning and the mess). I'm exhausted.

Thanks for all the tips! I'm so doing Ikea too in terms of storage for the kids after we get there. We're downsizing to half of the space so will need some creative storage. We're shipping the crib b/c my youngest will prob break out of an Ikea crib. LOL! Plus, we have the toddler rail that I never used for my oldest so he won't need another bed our entire time there.

I moved oversea and back and you are right, it's stressful. We were relocated by our firms, we are not military.

The main thing I would focus on, if you haven't already, is where you are going to live when you arrive. Will you have temporary furnished housing while your stuff is in transit or will you have to move to your permanent location and wait for your stuff? That pretty much dicates what you should bring.

Also, are you covered when you move back/relocate again? My first package was one way and when we decided to move, we self paid part of it. Again, this was fundamental in me deciding what I would bring and what would go to storage.

Basically, we lived very simply while abroad. We knew it wasn't permanent and we made sure that we were comfortable with the small amount of stuff we had. As an example, my son was born while we were abroad and we did his room in IKEA furniture. It wouldn't have been my first choice and I didn't do a "nursery" in the traditional sense of the word, but when it came time to move and we left all the furniture behind, we had only spent about $500 and I wasn't sad about it.

I'm sorry it's so stressful & even worse than you & your DH are strained & he's leaving soon! I hope that the air can clear soon for you guys!

I wasn't sure where to put this post so I'm going to put it under "Travel" since it's related to our move overseas. I mentioned about moving to Asia b/c of my husband's new job. It's been SO stressful. It'll be our first time moving with two kids (1 and 4) and a 12-year-old dog. My husband and I have been at each other's throat a lot these days. Partly b/c he can't seem to answer any of my questions and only just found out more about our move yesterday and he's leaving in 1.5 weeks. Lovely. Also, just sorting through things and making decisions has been a pain, especially since we are running out of time b/c my husband is going first. Then my boys, dog, and I will be leaving late Summer which means I won't have any help for 2 months (I'm moving to my aunt's in the third month). The reason why we can't leave early is b/c of our dog. We are taking her with us but she has a 180 day quarantine period at home before she can leave. Then she has another 21 day quarantine period after we arrive which sucks. At least here at home she's with us.

The most stressful part of our move is that I have to sort through things to ship two different ways (air and land/sea) and then sort through things to store. This is in addition to purging stuff we don't need. With two kids and my husband having SO many going away this and that for work, I barely have time to wash bottles or shower or better yet, eat!

Are there any military families here who move frequently? Even if my husband isn't military his job is with the gov't so our move will be exactly like how a military family is moved. Any advice, tips, or anything to help ease the stress and make the transition easier for the kids as well? Everyone is driving me crazy and my temper is at an all time high. I even snap at my dog for getting in the way when I'm walking (b/c she likes to follow me). :( I wish I was Samantha on Bewitched. Wiggle my nose and everything is done!
