We did something very similar last year. We moved the majority of our stuff to storage and then filled our cars with what we were taking to my parents' house for two months. It sucked to essentially move twice (once to the storage unit and once to our house) so if pods are a possibility, I think that is a great idea. We moved to my parents about a week and a half before we had to be out of our condo so we had some time to get organized.

Since my parents are in a large urban area, we had to also secure a monthly parking spot. We ended up getting a mailbox at the local UPS store because we didn't want to forward mail to my parents and get everything mixed up with theirs.

We moved long distance, didn't have a final destination yet, so we got a storage unit. It was a lifesaver, because we could put all kinds of things in there without having to worry about where to store it at my already full parent's house.

As for movers, once we had a move in date, I started calling around, it was about a month before. That was plenty of lead time, it was an in town move, took the better part of a day. Morning was loading up, afternoon was unloading.

Congrats! I've moved a ton, so here is my advice:

Call movers ASAP, they usually don't care where you are moving to as long as it is local so you can usually change the destination of your items at any time (a storage unit verus a new house). Make sure you find out what the cancellation or deposit refund process is - if you decide to go the POD route you want to be able to get your deposit back.

I haven't done a POD but my parents have. They liked it because they hold onto it for you and it only involves packing and unpacking once - versus how we did it in and out of a storage unit.

We moved out of our house and didn't have a new house so we got a PO Box to tide us over until we (finally) moved into our new house. The USPS makes it easy and lets you do it online. Make sure you update your magazines, they won't forward those very consistently.

I can't really offer an opinion on pricing for movers and storage - unless you are in the Boston area. It really depends on where you are! We have been able to hire movers to help us load our house and unload at storage for about $500 not including tip. It was about the same to get everything out of storage and into the house too. We had a 2 bedroom with a small storage area.

Good luck! I've moved a lot, so let me know if you have more questions!

We have a buyer for our house! As of last Monday, we have a contract and a settlement date of 6/17.

We don't have a house to move into yet (crossing our fingers like crazy we find something soon) and if we don't have a signed contract by 5/10 we won't be able to do a same day settlement. Our contingency plan is to move in with my parents during the gap in housing at most 3-4 weeks. LO will continue to go to her current daycare.

I've never done a big move like this before and I have no idea what i'm doing. We're already starting to pack our house but what I need to do regarding the other logistics. So bees that have moved help me out, what should i be doing?

- Calling and arranging movers - we'll be doing all the packing but we'll need help putting into trucks and moving - How soon do i need to call movers? Esp if we dont know where we're moving too
- how do i determine a good estimate for movers? what would be enough to cover a local move? what about storage?
- thoughts on pods? will i need 2? we have 1500sq ft house 3bds and a basement - no garage.
- mail forwarding, utilities, changing my address on all the things
