I hate moving no matter when I have to do it, so a few tips I have picked up along the way:
1. pack a survival box with toilet paper, paper towel, hand sanitizer, bottled water and snacks, diapers, wipes
2. Have extra garbage bags on hand for trash and also last minute packing
3. Go through your closet and purge stuff you haven't worn, don't move it if you don't use it!
4. Pack according to a system and label the boxes: 1 for must unpack right away, 2 for unpacking in a few weeks, 3 for long term storage.
5. Help your movers, label the rooms alphabetically on a floor plan in your new home, and then add the unpacking urgency, so master bedroom is room A, and then the boxes in there range A1, A2, A3.
6. Arrange to have things delivered to your new home if you can. Don't buy big furniture like a crib until you get to your final destination.
7. Check your insurance and see if you can arrange telephone calls with a new pediatrician. Make sure you get copies of all your medical records!

Good luck!

I'm interesting in this thread, too. We should be moving next year and I just started TTC again. We will most like drive across the country. I heard as long as you take a lot of breaks, you should be fine. The DH said that our LO could say they've been to X number of states before LO was 1.

We moved halfway across the country when DD was 4 months old. It went fine. We did a weeklong roadtrip to get to our new home. Just make sure you line up a new pediatrician ASAP when you move. Also, the other think that sucked was that our moving truck didn't show up for more than a week after we arrived at our new house. Camping out in our own house with the baby and no furniture was kind of a pain... but I think baby loved it since there was lots of space for her to roll around on the floor and play!

So we could moving at the end of preg or with a newborn. I'm the same DH's job will move us but I'm more concerned about the day and a half drive it will take us to get there with a newborn and two dogs! Eek

Goodluck with the move! Let us know how it goes and any tips!

I moved with a newborn from Seattle to Utah. At 5 weeks, we all trucked off to Utah and bought a house which we moved into when she was 4 months old (as Honeybee stated). It all went really smoothly and I wouldn't have changed a thing (except I would have driven with my partner for the 16 hr drive instead of caravaning!)

We moved across town when LO was 5 weeks. My mom watched LO while we loaded and unloaded the moving truck. I also wore her in a wrap during some of it. My DH also took several days off afterwards to get the house unpacked and settled, otherwise we'd probably still be unpacking 3 months later!

It's not ideal to be recovering, getting used to mommyhood, packing up all your shit, and moving, but it's definitely do-able. Just ask for help from anyone you can!

I waited until my son was 8 weeks old since I was flying and my pediatrician advised to wait for the first round of vaccinations. BUt my husband ended up leaving 2 weeks after he was born and got things settled on that end and I just hoped on a plane with my mom and sister plus my 8 week old and 22 month old. Not ideal but it did work out fine. He slept most of the way and being on a plane I could nurse him whenever I needed to. So if taking a train or flying is an option you should consider that. Not too sure how comfortable I would of been in a car at 3 weeks.

@sugar I didn't even think about that, duh I could hardly contort myself to nurse with baby in the carseat.. I'm in the process of figuring out my breast pump/insurance coverage so this is more impetus to get it done now! Thanks!

@dcyogabee @artbee thank you! happy to hear that it is possible. I keep telling myself that if you have to, you have to. But it helps to hear from others!!

My parents moved when I was 2weeks. Army didn't care how young was too young lol. My dad had orders, so they drove cross-country with a 2 week old baby! I turned out just fine! My mom rode with me, my brother with my dad. She took frequent stops. They (we) moved from KY to Cali.

We moved at 5 months, but we were commuting at 4 months. Good luck. Make the movers do everything!! Can your parents or friends come help? Extra hands just helps so much. The long ride- see if you can pump in the car and feed on the go. It will make everything easier when you are on the road, so you don't have to pull over and nurse for 45+minutes each time. It helped us when we did long car trips when she was younger.

If I had a choice, I'd definitely prefer to move while pregnant.. but it really isn't an option for us for a variety of reasons.

@aprk thanks! I know my Mom would be willing, especially since we'll have both cars to transport, so good call.

@betsyboop Yay glad to hear it. Hopefully baby will come "on time" and give us more time to recover and adjust before we make the trek.

We moved when our LO was 2 months and drove many many hours. I was really worried about it but it was fine, and LO slept the entire way. I'd say 3 weeks might be soon, I probably wouldn't have felt comfortable until 5 or 6 weeks following delivery. Good luck!

A family member moved 6 hours away with a newborn (less than 2 months) and it sounds like a similar situation to yours. What helped them was having another family member drive with them with the dogs, and helping them to set up house upon arrival, so they could focus on baby.

Good luck!

I know Mrs. Jacks moved when Little Jacks was 4 months (I think?). We'll be moving soon, but DS will be 9+ months, so I'm not much help there.

Do you have a pediatricain yet? Maybe you can ask him/her about moving with a newborn? Is there anyway you could extend your DH's start date for another month or so? Personally, I think it'd be easier to do it at the end of your pregnancy than with a newborn, as well, but I understand that might not be an option for you.

I don't have any tips on moving with a newborn but if anything changes and you have to move earlier I can give some advice. We had to move across the country (a 20 hour car ride) when I was 38 weeks along (I went to 40 weeks, 4 days). I would go by the advice of your doctor (mine said it was fine for me to move) but seeing how it was moving then and how life was after she was born, I'm glad we moved before I had her.

So, when we decided not to prevent pregnancy I thought it would be a long time before we had any results due to a family history of fertility issues. We didn't. We knew we'd be moving in the future, but thought it'd be late summer - so it wasn't a big deal to imagine moving in the late trimester.

Fast forward to now - I am 33 weeks and we finally have the final word of where my husband's next job is! It's with the same company, so there is flexibility on when he starts and they know I'm due in late November but.. wow.

There is no way we're going to try and find a temporary spot and organize movers, etc. etc. being this close to the due date (my OB said she didn't recommend switching or traveling after 34 weeks). SO that means we'll be moving with a newborn!

Anyone have any advice or who has survived? How young was your baby when you moved? Fortunately his work will provide professional movers - so I don't really have to worry about packing but am overwhelmed at the idea of driving 6 hours with a tiny, tiny baby in winter while we're figuring out breast feeding and I'm recovering from delivery. Our current lease goes through the end of December, so if I were to go to 42 weeks (ACK please no) we'd be moving when baby was 3 weeks old.

Wow this is a novel. Sorry!
