I'm sure it would be easier if we lived closer (as it is, we are only 1.5 hours away). But when I was born, my parents had absolutely no one to help - family was all several states away, and they had just moved to the town where I was born and so they barely had any friends. They made it work, and I'm sure Hubs and I will do the same. I am not ready or willing to move yet just to be near family, because I'm happy at my current job and will probably not find something I like nearly as much back home. So we'll stay put for a little while longer.

We are in the process of relocating this year so we can be closer to my family. They can help us out a bit with our son so I can go back to work.

It's totally not what I thought I would be doing, but my husband is actually taking the lead on it. He had to get his residency permit and he did all the research.

We moved to be closer to family once my little one was born. When I came back from maternity leave I thought about starting to look for a new job, and looked for positions in both where we lived at the time (Chicago) and where we wanted to move (Indianapolis). I actually had a few friends who worked in my industry in Indy, so I put feelers out with them and contacted some recruiters/checked job boards there and also told my recruiter in Chicago that I was looking for something. I found out about an amazing position in Indy, interviewed for it, and got it... and it was a no brainer to take it. My mom actually got a job offer the same week I did so they moved as well... we would have been 2.5 hours away from them (vs 6 in Chicago) but now that they have moved to Indy as well we are only 5 miles apart, which is about a 12 minute drive. Super easy and amazing to have parent support with a toddler!

@edelweiss: Well considering we now live close to his family, he's just ehh about it. He agrees that he would probably find a better job by my family and he likes the idea of being closer to water (more fishing, etc). Basically, he's on board with moving but I would have to do the work to find jobs, sell the house, etc.

@artbee: that seems like the perfect distance. 5 minutes is scaring me a little. but i felt very affirmed reading all the pros you listed--thanks!

@Thehistoryofus: how does your husband feel about moving?

@edelweiss: We're 15-30 away from each of our parents. Far enough away that they can't just pop in, but close enough that they can come when we need them :)

@Tidybee: I think the move would actually benefit our careers possibly. Where we are now are just government jobs which is hard to get into (I am in but DH isn't).

We also really like the area that they are in (closer to the water) and we both really like the idea of having more outside recreational activities to do.

a year ago, we moved to an area that is closer to my parents for quality of life reasons (i.e. less stressful jobs with good stability and pay) and with the thought that if we had kids one day, it might be convenient to be near them. we moved to a place about 40 minutes from them.

now that i'm pregnant, we are moving to an apartment *5* minutes away, for many of the reasons that @artbee: mentioned. i admit that it's very close and we may end up changing our minds and moving a little further away, but we'll see!

we changed jobs/areas because we were not that happy with our jobs--i'm not sure we would have moved otherwise. but it's a personal choice and depends on so many factors!

I would love this! We just moved farther away, though... I had been commuting a very long distance to my job and we needed to be closer to make it work out. So now we are about an additional hour south of where my family lives, making the whole trip over 2.5 hours. I just wish we were closer.

I think your desire to be closer makes perfect sense!

I would really love to be closer to my family, but their location just isn't the best for DH and me. It sometimes makes me a little sad that we will probably never be closer, but really, we are so much more comfortable and happy in our current location than we would be living in their area-- but I would be so much happier if we were close, so it's hard!
If that location works for you, I'd certainly try.

This more relates to when I was an infant, but soon after I was born, my parents and I moved cross country from New York down to Texas. And then my aunt, grandma, and grandpa all subsequently followed to be close to us.

Before we got married we moved to a town about an hour and a half away from our hometown. We just recently (this summer) moved back and it's already so much nicer being close to family! I'm sure that I'll be even more thankful that we're close once LO is here!

I live in the same town as my and DH's parents and it's AWESOME! Every Thursday night my parents take LO and my dog out to dinner so DH and I have a break. My mom is able to babysit LO whenever I need her if I have a doctor's apt or something. If we're invited to a wedding or something late we can always get a babysitter. The other weekend our good friends had a baby so we went to see them last minute at the hospital, of course we couldn't bring LO so we called DH's parents and they came right over. It's nice having people that we can trust with her and know her routine and schedule. And it's nice having free babysitting :)

That would be ideal for us as well, and DH always keeps an eye open for jobs in that area. Unfortunately for his line of work, there aren't many....

Has anyone moved to be closer to family? I am thinking of looking for jobs closer to my parents house. I like my job now, but living back home would be nice too. Just not sure the best way to go about it and not sure if it would be worth it. My LO would still have to go to daycare but we would have lots of help(maybe too much) being closer to my family.
