@smocks: I would say that DISD is hit or miss depending on the actual school. As mentioned, Lakewood gets great reviews. We don't live anywhere near there, so I haven't personally looked into it.
Withers and Kramer are in less expensive neighborhoods (both zones include $$$ houses and cheaper ones) and I know a lot of people that go to both and love it. They are both known for their dual language immersion programs. I also know people at both schools that don't live in the zones, but were able to transfer in.

We are not in DISD (DS is in a 2's class at daycare right now), but I'm happy to share what I have learned if you want to wall me.

@smocks: I know you didn’t ask me :silly: but I have friends at a couple DISD schools who are happy with them. Lakewood and Stonewall Jackson are well thought of (and in expensive areas - we looked there but decided going a bit north (across a major road) to Richardson schools made more $ sense). People still have questions about the middle school level but doesn’t seem like that would be an issue at this point. Lakewood is huge, I think they had 9 kinder classes this year!

ETA: we had a friend move into the Lakewood zone well after kinder roundup and they did not have a problem getting a spot, I think they have space there.

@MrsLonghorn: We will definitely confirm before we sign any lease! How are the DISD public schools for Kindergarten? The very few people I know in the area have suggested private school if we are in DISD districts but I don't know if that's necessary or not.

@MamaG: That's sort of another back-of-mind reason we're looking at Southlake - they're about maxed out for population growth, I think it's just shy of 30k right now and they're maxed out around 35k so there likely won't be substantial rezoning while my kids are moving through the school system.

@MamaG: there was CRAZY drama about that exact issue ... they wanted to build a new school and redraw and all the people who had paid top dollar to live by the one school had a fit as they’d lose property value if they lost that zone. Eventually the district backed down (is my understanding, could be wrong, it seemed complicated) so they are adding on to the school in question so they shouldn’t have to overflow in a couple years. It’s such a growth area for kids though that this isn’t the end I am thinking ... it’s just going to happen somewhere else, as long as job growth continues in dfw.

@bhbee: Is there a plan to add more schools or redraw boundaries for schools in RISD? I'm just curious. We have a bond proposal right now for our ISD due to growth, they added one elementary recently and are looking to build two more. It's crazy.

@MrsLonghorn: yes I think so. But RISD has a broad range of schools in terms of how parents feel about them so there has been major drama about overflow!

We’re also in dfw area and for us there’s no guarantee on your neighborhood school due to crowding in popular areas. They will find you a place, but it may not be where you want/expect for the first year. Just an FYI! No idea if that’s true where you are looking we are in Richardson ISD.

@smocks: @boopers and @mamag are right. I'm in Dallas, very close to HPISD (but we zone to DISD) and understand your rent vs buy challenges.

If you decide to go for the rental in HPISD, be certain to check the map boundaries. If you're on the wrong side of the street, you could easily be in DISD. Property values and rents are very closely aligned to the school district map because of that.

@smocks: You might want to consider GCISD as well, which is very close to Carroll and some might argue has aspects that are more appealing. I’m in neither of those but close by in HEBISD.

@Boopers: Thank you!! That's what I was hoping for. Good to hear from someone who is in that state though, I keep reading these threads about people on waiting lists etc and I was really hoping that wasn't the case for TX public schools.

@MamaG: DFW. If we buy, we'll likely be in Carroll ISD. If we rent, probably HPISD.

Public schools usually needs proof of residence (multiple proofs). We needed one utility bill (within 60 days)and a home deed or mortgage statement. or an lease agreement.
One thing to note that happened to my friend... she had signed on a house but didn't officially close until 2 weeks after school started. The school district would not let her kids start school until she officially closed. She didn't want to start them at their old district and then switch within 2 weeks...so her kids just stayed home for the first two weeks.

So where we are (SF Bay Area), you would be guaranteed a K spot in the school district, but not necessarily at your neighborhood school. Even some people who register on time (November-February) time frame, don't get into their neighborhood school. How "competitive" it is varies wildly from town to town.
*When I say neighborhood school, I mean the 1-2 schools closest to your residence. Some people have to drive their kids clear across town and there aren't always buses either.

Also in Texas and I can echo most of what @Boopers: said. In our ISD even if you early register on the Spring, you still need to reverify in the month school starts that you are still living where you said you did earlier. What part of the state are you moving to?

So in Texas you are zoned for a school district based on your address. Once you figure out the ISD you are living within, the district’s website will often have a place for you to enter your address, or a map with how neighborhoods are zoned for each school.

In my area, in March/April districts host a Kindergarten Roundup to get parents to enroll for the following year. It’s not required for you as a parent to enroll during this time. Enrollment will start the week or two before the school year starts (start dates vary by district) and you can even enroll within that first week of school. I would recommend checking enrollment dates and get everything ready before school. Most districts require ID and some sort of bill to verify your address to ensure you’re attending your correctly zoned school. The district’s website will have all the info about which documentation you need. If you have questions you can also call the school directly and ask. You would do all of your enrollment at your zoned school or “home campus”.

Kindergarten is open to everyone so they will enroll her as long as she meets the age cutoff which is 5 by September 1 of that school year.

I'm pretty sure that if you're moving to an area and want to attend the public school zoned for that area, they have to accept you once you have proof of residence. It's no different than if you had moved during the school year.

DD just turned 5 and will be going to Kindergarten in the fall. However, we are moving cross country (date TBD, but likely May-June this year). The plan is public kindergarten, since the location we're moving to has fabulous public schools.

However, we don't know yet if we're buying a house or renting for a few months when we get down there, and I don't know which school she would be going to.

I'm honestly at a loss of what I need to be doing right now - do I call the school district and have someone walk me through our situation, or do we have to talk to a specific school? Do they have to accept us, since it's public? There's no way she won't get into kindergarten, is there? I am so lost, she's in Jr-K right now but it's a completely different state and public school system (we are moving to TX where they have specific ISD's).

ANYONE have some thoughts or advice? Thank you!!!
