Good for you! I never lived in Florida, but I am an expat living in Europe. We're moving back to the US this year, we have to consider the cost of moving our things back or buying all new stuff, not sure how that figures for you. At the moment, it seems like it would be cheaper to sell what we can and donate the rest, buying what we need when we relocate. I left the vast majority of my "good stuff" in the US when I moved, so if I never see this stuff again, that would be fine by me! I did a corporate move to get here and we'll likely do self paid on the way back.

Another thing to consider is your banking and finances. Check your credit score and make sure you have some kind of credit history if you need to rent an apartment/house.

Buying (and selling) used items saves us a lot of money. List-serves like http://www.craigslist.com are convenient and free to find and post items.

Just be careful when meeting people, especially if you're in a not so good area. Meet in a public place or google map the house/area to check it out first. If it looks unsafe, don't go.

Good luck on your move!

I'm in the Tampa bay area so about 1 1/2 hours from you. My bil is in Orlando so we visit as much as we can. He loves living there. Hope you do too!

@artbee: Thanks! I've lived in Florida before, for a few months at a time, but only as a child. Plus a couple months for my wedding.
I think we'll be in the Orlando area - what part of FL are you in, if you don't mind saying?

Yay welcome to Florida! Let me know if you have specific Florida questions, I've lived here my whole life. The warm weather keeps me here.

Phew! You do move a lot! Do you know where in Florida you will be? If you're looking for good prices on things, I would suggest Walmart for groceries and household supplies. I just saw your other post about Costco and someone said it well. It's a good deal if you are going to eat everything you buy in bulk there. Costco and BJ's do tires and gas, I would suggest just seeing what is close to where you will be living and choose that one..

The Sunday paper always has coupons for food and you can use them at BJ's, if that is where you get your membership. They also have their own coupons. Costco doesn't take manufacturer coupons but they have their own coupons you get in the mail, as well.

You can find deal sites online that tell you about upcoming sales and deals. We follow a lot of those.

@mediagirl: Haha, thanks! I'm excited about heat too. We'll be in Florida, so maybe I should be more concerned about air? :)

Well, we'll be in FL for the first part and then MI for second part. So I'm thinking we're looking at about four moves in the next three years, which is less than usual! :)

Congrats on moving to the states! Can I just say, I'm so excited you'll have heat? :-) Do you know where you will be living? That really makes a big difference in helping you figure out costs of things.

It looks like we're going to be proper Americans for a little while!

As you might know already from previous posts, DH and I are longtime ex-pats. We've been living in various overseas posts since we were kids (I've been overseas since age 14, and DH since age 7!), and we usually only spend the occasional summer in the USA.

We've just accepted a new posting that will have us living in the USA for 1-3 years! It will be a very new experience for us, since even though we are technically American, we're used to living abroad.

Any tips for budget living in the USA? Are there any other ex-pats here that have moved back home? Just trying to wrap my mind around the whole thing- it's weird.
