Thank you all for your comments! Just wanted to follow up to say we spoke with the director and she completely agreed with our concerns. She plans to move one teacher from the ones classroom to the transitional (older infant) room and our daughter (along with two other babies close to her age) will be there until the fall, when they are all one year old.

I'm so relieved because I really loved this preschool and I love it even more now! They really listened to our concerns and found a solution.

If they are doing it to consolidate classes for the summer definitely see if they will work with you on naps and bottles. No way was my son ready to give up two naps at 9 months. Even when he transitioned to the 1yr old room he still had two naps for a month or so because he needed it. My daycare was able to accommodate that.

I guess never say never but I would push back. I know neither of my kids could have done ALL of those before one. My first would have been closer than my second who still needs a good chunk of time for daily naps and only transitioned to 1 nap at 18m! I would absolutely expect the school to at the very least work with her on everything except the nap (because that nap probably determines teacher breaks, class activities, etc, I think they might not budge. But it seems crazy to me to expect a 9 month old especially if she's bottle fed at home to give up bottles and purees, and wear shoes if she isn't a steady walker already.

@T.H.O.U.: oh wow! it's so easy to check out state laws. My DCP is not supposed to have my kid on a floor bed since he's under 12 mos/ under 18 and not walking.

Hmm @SteelerGirl: I wonder what you will find out about your state.

I agree that I would raise my concerns and see how you can find a compromise. Maybe she could still nap in a crib in the infant room and just be in the older room when she's awake?

I would ask if she can keep some of the things she needs until she is old enough (bottles, crib, 2nd nap, etc). They may be able to accommodate you. We actually went through the opposite situation with DD, where she wasn't allowed to move into the toddler room until she was 18 months due to lack of space. I requested that she start to receive some of the normal toddler "stuff" (like the same snacks, mat on floor, and reduced tuition!) at age 15 months which is when she normally would have moved into the toddler room and our daycare did that for us.

I would talk with the director before jumping to any conclusions. I know you said that they're moving her because they need to consolidate, but if they're willing to work with her and help you wean her off of bottles early, help with feeding, etc, I would welcome the change. My LO was moved up just before he turned 1 and it did wonders for him being the youngest in a class that he could learn from. He was talking way before my oldest was at that age and was feeding himself by the time he was a year. It was exciting!

@SteelerGirl: I just did a quick google - because I asked last week if DD was transitioned to a cot and I thought I recalled her saying yes since she was 1+ she was on a cot f/t now - and quickly found that until 1 they must be in a crib/porta crib in my state.

You may check some of your licensing requirements...or ask them to provide them...to prove they can do this...

@SteelerGirl: Our center shifted things a bit a year ago. They went from having infant, then Tod 1 thru 3 rooms, then pre-school. They previously had restricted moving to Tod 1 to walkers - so they would not move a baby up until they were at least starting to walk unassisted.

They have now created more toddler space - to accommodate that kids move through the toddler spaces at such varying rates. Mobile babies can now be moved into the Tod 1 room at 12 months - though I have seen them move a baby as young as 11 mos.

They have a crib in the corner. They have two kinds of tables (one slightly more restricted for younger babies). They have a fridge so they can have bottles.

I know they say its to create diff toddler spaces - but a part of me does also think its a bit of a play to have the flex to move a baby up to bring in a new one. Which is ok - they are a business I get it - but at least they have made modifications to accommodate the little ones.

DD is 13 months. She is not walking yet (she will walk around things while holding them but has not taken any solo steps or stood up on her own yet). I was very nervous about her being in there with some 17 mos olds who cruise around yet are still a bit oblivious to their surroundings. So far it has been ok - and DD has a big sister so she is a bit used to being around crazy big kids.

I would not feel guilty at ALL demanding they accommodate her at her current needs and not force her to "grow up" faster than she is ready to. Its ok to accommodate their business decisions - but they also need to accommodate your daughters development and not force her to make leaps she may not be ready for.

That sounds like they have a problem. Not you (in the sense that it is theirs to solve. You don't have to be overly accommodating) . They either need to find an age appropriate place for your daughter (2 naps, bottles, age appropriate activities, mushy foods) or need to stop advertising that they serve children her age. I'd be talking to the director because I'd really be concerned at if they'd be doing developmentally appropriate activities.

Thank you all for your replies! I feel much better pushing back with the knowledge I'm not the only one who thinks this is crazy.

As we understand it, they are eliminating one of the two infant rooms for the summer so they must find places for those babies. She was next in birth order so she got selected to move up. There's really no other place for her. I understand their dilemma but I believe they should go out of their way to accommodate her needs, even in a different classroom. If that means she's the only one napping twice in a crib and taking bottles, so be it!

This would bug me, especially the nap and bottle thing. My LO was moved up early to the older baby room but the only issue there was he was less mobile than his classmates. I'd push back on it in your place.

@SteelerGirl: I would talk to the director and as soon as possible to understand more. Personally, I would not be comfortable with LO moving to a toddler room at 9 months because at that age LO wasn't ready for 1 nap and certainly wasn't ready for only sippy cups).

Is there any way they will let your LO stay in the infant room and move someone else's kid to the toddler room?

9 months is still very much a baby to me! 2 naps would be a must... and the crib thing would bother me a lot as well. My daughter never actually used a bottle so I can't comment on that ( I breastfed and didn't pump) but the other things would majorly concern me.

That room sounds too advance for a 9 mos old. I'd push back as long as you can. The room my LO is in now is like the 1 year old room you describe except they don't force the sippy cup issue. If we don't bring one in then there isn't one for them to give. He transitioned at 11.5 mos though.

Pretty much this exact situation happened to us with DD1. They moved her up to the young 1-year-old room when she was 8 months old due to space issues. She wasn't even crawling yet! It was rough until she turned 1, but she also only attended part-time most of that time (we usually reduce to 2-3 days/week over the summer because DH is a teacher), so that may have made the transition tougher as well.

We were initially told the sippy cup/nap mat/shoes thing was a requirement as well, but it ended up not being an issue. The only thing they insisted on was the shoes, which is a health/safety requirement, so we sent her in a cheap pair of crib shoes until she was walking. They did have to allow the continued use of bottles and crib until 1 year old. They started transitioning her to sippy/straw cup and nap mat right around 1 year, but we'd already transitioned her to a straw cup at home during that time and she did amazingly well on the nap mat (actually slept better on the mat, believe it or not!).

The room was kind of a transition room at our center at the time (they've since switched things up) so the kids were on a one nap schedule but they would put the youngest ones down for a second nap if they needed it. Unfortunately this meant DD had often just fallen asleep when I came to pick her up

I would definitely inquire about whether the move was really necessary, but if it turns out to be the only option at least push back on the bottles/nap mat/etc because I think that's totally unreasonable and they may actually realize that in practice as well. For what it's worth, the situation totally resolved itself when DD turned 1 - she was much better able to keep up at that age, despite being the only non-walker in the class.

Did they give you a reason for the early move up? This seems very early to move a baby especially for the first move.

They have asked twice to move my daughter up (bc she was ready - it was 4 or 6 weeks early) and then recently asked if I minded if she stayed in pre-school for the summer since all of her friends were there. It always seems like they are doing it in the best interest of my daughter.

I would not be pleased with them doing it as a numbers game and would 100% inquire further. 9 mos is WAY early to be limiting bottles, pushing solids, restricting naps, etc. Unless your daughter is super advanced and her needs are driving this I would definitely put up some resistance. And ultimately - if they are pushing it bc of numbers it would make me question the center as a whole - for putting business over the well being of the kids...

@SteelerGirl: You should talk to the director and teachers and tell them all your concerns. How can they justify rules about bottles and stuff when they go against health recommendations? My daughter was moved up to the 2-3 class before she was 2 because she STILL needed some help feeding herself (it's not that she couldn't feed herself, she just didn't') and in the 1-2 room the teacher babied her a bit and would feed her every few bites and then verbally tell her to take bites. I was worried, but then the 2-3 room teacher did the same thing.

We were just informed my now 8mo daughter will be moving up to the 1 yr olds class at daycare when she is only 9 months. We were excited until we learned that meant she was not allowed to use a bottle (sippy cups only), would only get one nap a day (and only at the scheduled time), sleep on a mat on the floor instead of in a crib, is required to wear shoes, and (I assume) would have to feed herself all solids.

I feel like the school is just doing this to make room in her infant class and it is not in her best interest, or even possible, for her to make all these changes at such a young age.

Have you ever heard of a 9 month old capable of doing these things? Would you expect the school to accommodate her, or for her to adjust?

I'm seriously panicking over this. Help!
