The sudden move would rub me the wrong way for sure. We get 3 weeks usually and had to sign off on a shorter transition the one time they wanted to for space issues. But I'd actually be happy for LO to be one of the younger in a class, she learns so much from older kiddos.

@sunny: honestly I wouldn't worry too much about moving from a 6:1 to a 7:1 ratio. But they should be able to accommodate a transition period.

I think you are fully in your right to just decline the move at this time. But LO may be held back with younger kids in the younger room.

that seems like a really inadequate ratio for such LOs :( will they be adding an aide or have a floating teacher come in to help sometimes? i guess it's legal for them to do that in your state, but just because they can doesn't mean they should. maybe working in preschools in a state that would only allow 4:1 or 9:2 for her age gave me unrealistic views of what ratios should look like, but i can't see how nearly double that number of kids per teacher would be a positive move if she's already feeling insecure at school. did they give a reason that they thought it would benefit her? i don't see why she should get shortchanged to make room for them to move more kiddos into the infant room, it seems like a $$ driven move rather than a move because the kids are ready. have they had her visiting the other classroom for a portion of the day before today or are they just planning on doing it with no transition starting tomorrow? poor little lady! that's rough :(

I would be skeptical too. The fact that they emailed you last night and are starting it today is very fishy. We knew weeks ahead of time when LO would be transitioning. It sounds like they are motivated by the $$. Transitioning this soon after your daughter started there is too soon. It took DS a couple of months to get used to his new room when he transitioned.

I would be very concerned about this sudden notification and if it were me personally, I would not be okay with it. I'd want to talk to the director asap. I'm kind of headstrong like that though, haha.

In our last daycare, they tried to get me to move the boys up to the 12-24 mo room when they were only 11 months and I flat out refused.

@MamaMoose: good point. I just double checked and the ratio of 7-1 is legal for 12-29 months in my state. One of the reasons we chose this daycare was the better than required ratios.

I would talk to them and say you are open to the idea of an early transition but you would like a few transition days with her spending some time in the new classroom before deciding.

You could also ask what the specific ages will be of the children in that class. If they are moving 5 kids up, they might also be moving 5 of the older kids up as well.

@sunny: While that is strange to move a child immediately, I wouldn't worry too much about it. When I taught in preschool I started with ages 10-12 months. We moved some children up during the year and we took 2 children from the infant room. The ones who moved up really thrived and began to function as their peers did, it was really amazing!

I would definitely be uncomfortable with a full time all of a sudden move. And I would also check the ratio laws in your state. Is she even allowed to be in a 7-1 ratio room before she's 24 months?

I'd be extremely skeptical of an email wanting to move a child TODAY. A change like that needs to be thought out and prepared for. It sounds business motivated to me as well. I'd detail your concerns and make her respond. "Oh, she'll be fine" does not count as a response.

I'm a bit jaded in this because I used to have LO at a big corporate day care and I think her care suffered due to the center chasing dollars. We moved her to small nonprofit and have been happy since then.

Just re-read your post - they want to move her today or transition her starting today?

Our DCP takes 2 weeks to transition to the next classroom - adding time each day

Its funny because our DCP told us that they never move up to "make room" but its a big fat lie! :silly:

They moved my DD up to the preschool room 3 months early and she wasn't even PT yet - They assured me she was ready except for the PT skill - I let them move her up and she did amazing!!!! She was PT within a few weeks and all of a sudden was knowing her letters and numbers and started writing!

It was great for her!

p.s. my DD is also tiny and is the smallest in her class- so I feel your nervousness there!

Is your LO in the infant room now? Or a toddler room?

Nevermind--just re-read and saw that she's in the 18-24 month room. Can they do a trial run where they put her in the other room for 1/2 day and see how she does? I'd be hesitant to move her without at least a trial period.

My LO just turned 20 months and I got an email last night from the daycare owner saying she wants to move my LO to the next room TODAY, along with 5 kids in her class.

Her current room is supposed to be for 18-24 months and has a 6-1 ratio, with 2 teachers in the room. The next room is for 2-2.5 yr and has a 7-1 ratio with 2 teachers in the room.

I think the decision is business motivated (rather than because she is developmentally ready) because I know there is a huge waitlist to join the infant rooms. We have only been with this daycare for about 3 months. Dropoff is still very tough and she cries every morning.. LO is also a peanut. I worry that since a 2.5 yr old can be in the room, she'll just get run over.

Should I let them move her up with her 5 friends? 3 of them also have summer birthdays so they are also not quite 24 months.

Or should I keep LO in then 18 mo classroom with the teacher she knows and loves?

Sorry for the novel! :-)
