No tests other than the diaper for blood (which was visible anyway). As others have said, allergy tests are not reliable/not testing for the right thing. Her diapers are still mucousy with occasional specks of blood even though I’m dairy/soy/egg free for weeks now/almost since birth (same happened with LO1). However I think it’d just be worse if I was consuming dairy and it’s not worth it to me to test it out.

However, I think if you’re really feeling like she might not have an intolerance go ahead and test it out. You might have a fussy baby on your hands but at least it will help confirm things more.

My experience was the same as @Pollywog: and honestly anything that helps ME sleep better in the early days is worth it. :)

We were symptom only for both kids. There was no visible blood, but both kids were considerably happier when I was off dairy and soy. In both cases I switched my diet without consultation with the pediatrician

My son is dairy intolerant and was diagnosed by symptom only. He had visible blood in his diapers. His pediatrician said the tests aren’t very good since the intolerance is usually more of a digestive difficulty than a true allergy so you can get a negative test but still have a sick baby. When I did a dairy trial a few weeks ago he was noticeably fussier, had mucusy diapers, and spit up a ton.

They tested a dirty diaper for blood but similar to above I knew it would be positive. Soy was never suggested for us and she was hesitant on dairy (research shows it’s over suggested and eliminating a food group is a big deal) until we confirmed the blood in her diaper.

Allergy testing is usually not helpful in this case. Our daughter did allergy testing and is not allergic to milk despite having blood in her diaper. Our allergist explained it’s a maturation issue - the milk protein is really large and some babies just have trouble breaking it down. He also said, fwiw, that he only suggests elimination in the case of blood in diaper.

My DS had visibld blood in his stool. They did tst a dirty diaper for blood but I knew it would be positive.

They can do a blood test for allergies but I skipped that....drawing vial of blood at 9 months was hard enough, I can't imagine when he was little little.

The elimination diet showed his symptoms go away which was enough of a diagnosis for me.

First of all, I apologize for repeatedly posting about the same topic. But, thank you for the support, advice and for sharing your experiences.

I’m wondering if it’s normal for a pediatrician to suggest eliminating dairy and soy without running any kind of tests on baby or on baby’s poo.

What kind of testing did your pediatrician do, if any?
