@HappyBaker: oh cool....I thought that only worked with elemental formulas. Will look into that once I go back. (I'll buy the first tub on my own.)

My DS has a dairy allergy so was on Nutramagen, one tip is to see if your doc will write a prescription for the formula so you can get it through the pharmacy instead of off the shelf, call your insurance first to see if they cover it! For us we had already met our deductible that year so we ended up getting the formula free. Good luck!

@travellingbee: @SweetCaroline: @Mrs. Deer: thanks!!! This is reassuring !!

@Pollywog: I am so hopefully it will work & I can provide for the twins!!! Just nervous because the timing of breaks to pump is less than ideal (aka 2 pumps per day....25% of the time my pumps will be 1 hour apart.)

Anyone have a strong preference for either (less stinky breath or staining of clothes or better poop.....etc) assuming they are tolerated the same by DS?

My son was MSPI and on alimentum. Those formulas are still dairy or soy based but the proteins are already broken down so the body doesn't have to do that. That is what an MSPI baby is having trouble with. Your baby would be unlikely to react to alimentum or nutramigen.

I believe they're not soy proteins though right? Is it soybean oil or soy lecithin? Those formulas are the cheaper and more readily available options. We ended up starting with an elemental formula, but were eventually able to switch to Alimentum and I kind of wish we had just tried that first.

I feel you. My son has MSPI. I am going on 9 months and have been a successful pumper. It can happen, even with stressful jobs.

If you need to supplement, I was told to try either of those formulas. If there was a reaction, there are prescription formulas to try.

@meadow: I'm not a MSPI expert, but DD had a cow's milk and corn allergy, with a potential soy intolerance. I can tell you that the ready-to-feed Alimentum did not have corn, but the powdered Alimentum did. So...perhaps check that from a soy standpoint.

I think the idea is that the dairy and soy proteins are broken down so far in Alimentum/Nutrimigen the body does not recognize and react to them. I'm a little far removed from this now (aka my mom brain is crap...), so perhaps consult Dr. Google or maybe someone else will chime in.

My DS seems to be MSPI. I eliminated dairy/soy 4 weeks ago and have noticed a significant improvement in his fussiness and most notably his puking.

I go back to work soon and am seriously concerned with being able to provide enough breastmilk for both my DS and DD. I am going to try to continue to provide only breastmilk but if I have to begin combo feeding I will need to decide if I keep him on breastmilk and give DD formula and any milk that is left or to supplement them equally with formula.

I asked the ped. about what formula would be appropriate for DS and she suggested Nutramigen or Alimentium but when I looked at their ingredients both included soy.

I was told to eliminate soy because roughly 50% of babies with a milk protein intolerance also cannot tolerate soy. So why would these formulas have soy? I know there are even further restricted formulas that are crazy expensive that are soy-free also.

Is it normal for MSPI children to be okay on Nutramigen or Alimentium? Anyone with experience or suggestions?

I do not have a giant freezer stash to fall back on so I kind of want to have a backup plan ready to go and not have to sort this out WHILE transitioning back to working full time. Thanks!!!!!!!!!
