@Mae: despite what you may read, I really don't think there is a "correct way" to do solids with a child, just because everyone is different. The actual premise of BLW is really different than just giving big chunks of food---literally, it is "weaning" from milk, at whatever pace/age the baby chooses. So, a baby may not actually eat anything until they are 7,8,9,12 months old...they might just play with the food and figure out texture, suck on it, etc. Or they may go 100% toward food and start weaning from milk. And you have to throw out your pediatricians recommendations for how much food/how much milk a baby "should" be eating and just let the baby do what they want.

I'm lucky to have a close group of mom friends whose babies were all born around the same time as my LO and it's been so interesting to see the various results from the same methods. I'd say about half our group tried BLW and the results were so different! Some kids just took right to it and starting eating whole foods quite early; some kids barely at at all until our LOs were 1--they more like just played with the food. Some kids had a lot of trouble (this is where my LO fell in) and we as parents backed out and went to the traditional way of starting foods (My LO would shove whole spears into her mouth, choke, and throw up...this happened multiple, multiple times until she started refusing all foods, and I felt like I was making her fear eating so I stopped giving her large chunks of food. Anyway, My LO is a great eater now, so I can see in hindsight how silly it was that I used to stress over the METHOD I was using to get her to eat.

One of the kiddos who loved BLW actually ended up weaning from the breast super early--around 11 months, which saddened her mommy (my friend) who thought they'd be breastfeeding until 2. But the baby preferred food, and it was what it was.

@Anagram: Interesting. I was hoping you'd chime in :) I was thinking of doing this, but it was recommended we do BLW full stop, rather than doing any purees, because there is a concern that spoon feeding will continue our issues with her food refusal since it is us feeding her. So we were planning to just start her with whole soft veggies. :/ Gah so many ways to try to do this!

LO is still on Alimentum at 12 months. We started solids (purees) at 4 months per the pediatrician and it never affected her intake of formula.

@Tanjowen: that's exactly what our Ped recommended....mixing cereal or puree with the Neocate to keep her used to that taste. Sadly, it didn't work for us... but it must work on other babies! Our LO didn't like solids until 7 months and didn't get *really* into them until after 12 months.

I wonder if you mix the oatmeal with the formula that it might do the trick? Or make a smoothie with avocado/banana and the formula, so the taste is still there...

I don't remember her having any issues taking Nutramigen after starting solids. Even though the Nutramigen seemed gross to us she didn't seem to mind it!

My son loved nutramigen and also loved solids. He drank more nutramigen after he started solids.

Fwiw our ped told us nutramigen is the most palatable of the elemental formulas!

We started solids at 5.5 months (tried sooner but he wasn't having it). He loved food and it did not affect him liking his formula. M was on Neocate which didn't smell as bad as Nutramigen though. If you're worried just wait. We did cereal first and it was so gross.

Hopefully it is for nothing because I didn't find this to be the case. My LO still loved her Nutramigen! It seems gross to us, but they still drink it somehow...

Not all kids take to solids right away and you start with giving them a small amount so they'll still want their milk.

If you're worried, maybe delay solids? If things are going good for now then maybe wait a while.

When you started your MSPI baby on solids, did it have any effect on their willingness to drink their formula? We are thinking of wading a toe into solids next weekend but I just got to thinking about how our pediatrician had warned us how awful Nutramigen tastes. And when she was still getting both breast milk and formula, she definitely ate much less overall (I suspect because she didn't like the taste of the nutramigen so switching back and forth was hard on her and she never really wanted to drink the formula unless she was starving).

So now I'm worried that once we start solids with her she'll realize how good food can taste and start refusing her gross formula! Anyone else have this issue? Or am I worrying for nothing?
