DS1 had a dairy intolerance and Nutramigen was wonderful for him. We chose that over Alimentum because our doc said it was more palatable.

@Anagram: @skipper2010: really?! I thought they'd be safe, seeing as they're marketed as allergen free! But yes- he reacts to the tiniest amount (like, if there are modified milk ingredients in something I eat the tiniest bit of, he's projectile vomiting the next day). So it might have to be one of the amino acid formulas then...yikes!!
Makes me certainly want to up my pumping game a little more to avoid the formula as long as I can! He's 8 months old, so he'll be starting to decrease the amount of milk he needs soon, hopefully!

I agree with Anagram...Nutramigen still has milk proteins so it may not work. It didn't work at all for my daughter and we gave it weeks. Neocate is what did the trick. Neocate is amino acid based and she is seriously a new baby on it. No more mucus in her stools, no more projectile vomiting. no more fussing during feeds. It's very expensive, but my insurance covers it 100% with a prescription. At 5 mo we go through a couple cans/week. Good luck I hope you find something that works for you LO!

Just a warning--if your LO is reacting to very small amounts of dairy, Alimentum and Nutragimen may not work for you. Alimentum was terrible for my LO1--who had a more severe case of MSPI I guess (her diaper was just...full on blood. Not tiny bits--huge globs of blood, and she was up all night screaming after some Alimentum mixed in with BM).

Anyway, so then we tried one of the elemental formulas--those are extremely expensive--$45/can. A can lasts 4-5 days if you are fully on formula. We tried Neocate, and we just couldn't get her to drink it, ever. We tried for months and months--at most, we could get her to drink 1 oz w 5 oz bm.

Long story short, I just continued on my MSPI diet till she was 13 months and I weaned her to hemp milk.

LO2 is sensitive to dairy but not as sensitive. THis time around, I've lately had a supply problem (she's 9 months now), and some days I'm not making enough. I have been able to mix in 1.5 oz ready-to-feed alimentum in with bm and she will take it (well, it took her 2 days to get used to that taste). However, her eczema has flared up, and I think it's due to the alimentum.

We use the can of powdered Alimentum (just started last weekend) and he took a few days to take to it. Now he's taking about 16 ounces at daycare and I'm ebf at home. The can seems to be half full after one week. So maybe two weeks on a can for us?

My little man is on the alimentum RTF. It is ungodly expensive 😩. He's doing good on it though so it is what it is. He was never breast fed and he's been on it since he was 4weeks old.

We used Nutramigen. If your ped will write a prescription for it some insurances will cover the cost.

We used Alimentum. Since DD had a corn allergy, we were stuck with RTF Alimentum, which was $10/container. All other formulas (including powdered Alimentum) have corn syrup solids (or if they didn't, they most certainly had dairy or soy she would react to). She was drinking nearly a container/day. *gulp*

RTF Alimentum is more palatable than powdered Alimentum. It smells a lot better (still bad!) too.

I hope you can skirt by with the powdered kind! Good luck! Food intolerances and allergies are no fun.

Max was diagnosed with GERD and a dairy sensitivity at about 6 weeks old. He's been on Prevacid since then, and I've been dairy free since then. When he turned 6 months, we tried to stop the Prevacid and it was a complete disaster. So we went back to the specialist for a follow up.
She evaluated my diet and his symptoms, and seemed shocked by the tiny amounts of dairy he reacts to. She mentioned that babies with reactions like this are often also sensitive to soy, and said that she was fairly confident diagnosing Max with MSPI.

All of that being said - I'm going back to work in a few weeks, and I need to start supplementing a bit with formula, since I'm really struggling to keep up my pumping output (especially now that I'm cutting out soy!)

Have you used Nutrimagen or Alimentum? Is one better than the other? How long does a can last (they seem EXPENSIVE!). Help!
