@charlotte: I'm so sorry you're still having such issues! I'll try to give a brief summary here but I don't know how helpful it will because because my LO actually had no trouble sleeping at this time. This period of her life was her best sleep until 14 mo when she finally STTN.

Basically for us-- I had low supply so I was breastfeeding and supplementing, then for reasons that prob aren't important here I moved to EP'ing and supplementing with regular formula. At some point she started refusing her morning bottle every day but she was still taking the others so we didn't worry about it. About 2 weeks later she started getting really fussy taking other bottles. She would turn her head and push the bottle away from her face. For a day or two I was chill about it but over the course of a few days it got to the point where she was refusing ALL bottles. I would sort of push the issue and that just made it worse. She would eat a little then, but only with a LOT of sobbing, and she started crying as soon as she would see a bottle. I called her ped and took her in and they said maybe reflux and gave her zantac. It did nothing. Things got worse. She hardly ate for another 3 days until my husband realized if we did a "dream feed" (I.e. feed her right after she fell asleep) she'd down a whole bottle. So we started doing that for all her feeds to get her to eat and she went back to normal amounts but still refusing to eat AT ALL awake. I called the ped again after the weekend and they blew me off so I fired them and got a new ped. She immediately told me this was very not normal. She sent her for a swallow study, a referal to a ped gi doc, and told me in the meantime to cut all dairy/soy out of my diet and do nutramigen. Within 4 days she was eating willingly awake again (albeit with a lot of requirements but I don't think those are important to this convo). We kept the referral appts and she had no issues with her swallow study. The GI doc was super unhelpful. He said maybe reflux, probably MSPI, but also probably I'd made the issue worse by being anxious about it. I don't know that he was wrong but also fuck off dude, my 3 month old is refusing to eat and I'm scared and OF COURSE I'M ANXIOUS. He switched us to prevacid and her eating got better. We tried to wean her off of prevacid at 9 months and there was much puking. We finally got her off at 15 months. This whole time we followed the rule of keeping her upright 20-30 min after every feeding, even MOTN feedings. At 13-14 months we did dairy trials and she is fine with all dairy. We haven't done legit soy trials (like-- give her edamame) because we just don't eat much soy. But we don't check labels and she has had some items with soy sauce or soy additives and she's fine.

So my takeaway was that she most likely had reflux AND mspi and some combo of that made her stomach hurt badly enough that she would rather starve than be in pain. The combo of prevacid + nutramigen seems to have solved the physical part of her issue (she still had lingering fear issues about eating until about 9 months I believe). She's now grown out of both and eats normally, except that she just doesn't like milk so she doesn't drink it (or formula, we just feed her normal food for calories). I hope that helps! Feel free to ask any questions you have.

@Mae: I've been constantly searching the boards for each day's symptoms and I'm starting to feel like your stalker because it all aligns with your old posts. Do you have a full summary of what happened with your daughter anywhere or would you recap here? i.e. Was reflux ultimately also an issue or just MSPI?

We are a few days into Nutramigen. She's eating plenty but having times that she wakes and seems hungry but freaks out taking the bottle. Her gas seems better but she's grunting and doing things all night and not sleeping. I'm trying to watch her and it seems like she is sticking her tongue out. She is also spitting up small amounts. This all seems to be worst at night when I lay her in her bassinet. things are better in the day, when she's usually in a rock n play or my arms.

All in all i describe her as: it's not that she wakes up a lot at night - she's just constantly awake. And in the day it seems like she's exhausted and making up for the nights sleep.

I feel so lost. We have all the gear and all the tips and strategies and 5 S's and experience with my son who was sleeping like 10 hrs at 3 mos. and this is just...devastating at the moment! (Dramatic much??). I'll take any advice i can get.

I'm sorry that what you've got is MSPI, but it sounds like you're on the right track! It can take a few weeks for things to even out. I'd give it more time.

@charlotte: I bet the poop will continue to improve although may stay green. We also outgrew the dairy and egg intolerances! DS could eat dairy by about 18 months, although doesn't really like it still.

@charlotte: We didn't try Nutramigen but it definitely takes a little while to clear out baby's system, so as long as she seems to be improving (sounds like she is if the blood is gone), I wouldn't worry. Sorry you are dealing with this but I'm glad you got some answers. I totally feel you, I went on a crazy elimination diet for LO1 but I think I would probably go for formula if it happens with a future LO. FYI, my LO had bad MSPI and other sensitivities (which we were never able to figure out) and she was able to eat everything with no residual problems by 14 months.

@charlotte: That is great she is less fussy, such a relief. In my experience Nutramigen is really easy for them to digest so DS's poop has always been much wetter / more explosive than his breastfed older sister's ever was. He is 9 months now and his poop is still no thicker than yogurt on a good day, and it is still green every day!

New question for those with Nutramigen experience. Did it take a while to stop having explosive totally full diaper green brown diahreas? She stopped having the chunks and blood and now it's just a whole lot of liquid. Normal for day 2 and will improve?

I'm not going to change anything now but just wondering if I should be worried that this isn't working either or its normal and with time may get better ... I'd say she is about 75% less fussy so that's a good thing ....

@MrsSRS: will def ask about this at her follow up next week
@Mae: thank you! I'm at target all the time so that's easy! (Though good deal on formula may be offset by fall decor impulses ha). And it is SO good to hear that she outgrew it. I'm obviously hoping for the same. They said my sons peanut allergy has pretty much no chance of leaving so I am glad at least this issue has better odds.

I'm sorry you're dealing with this but glad you got it sorted out! My LO was MSPI an on nutramigen from about 2 mo. It's expensive and that sucks (best price I found was target when they were running sales). She grew out of it and now at 16mo is eating normally :)

@charlotte: I was already vegetarian, and it was the kick I needed to go vegan. Bright side??

I do think that baby's physical (stomach) symptoms start to go away sooner than later. Baby might still experience rash or other symptoms for a few weeks, but the gassiness and mucous can start healing soon. Also, you'll want to check with a pediatrician, but we started Klaire Labs Infant Probiotic at that time, to restore gut health. Best wishes to you!!!

@MrsH: thank you! I can see how it would be terrible and that is what I want to avoid. I feel like my house would end up being totally top 8 allergen free and with a husband who isn't that into vegetables it's like ...what would we all eat and who would have time to make it? There's a time in my life when I could get organized and try to tackle it but not with a toddler and one month old.

@littlejoy: ugh sorry to hear that! I don't know why but I was totally not expecting this. And it's good to remember that it could take awhile since I am dying to see results as soon as possible ! She already seems better today but we will see about tonight. I think she's as exhausted as I am from being up the last few nights.

We found out our daughter had major dairy intolerance this way. Keep in mind, it can take 3 weeks for the dairy to clear both of your systems. So, don't lose hope if you cut it out, and don't notice a change right away.

Dairy problem / blood confirmed at the dr. She also isn't gaining well... Only up 4 oz in last 2 wks. :bummed: They agreed we should do Nutramigen this week and return for another check soon. I could try eliminating things and still pumping but I don't think I will. It's hard enough EPing with my toddler around + he is allergic to wheat and nuts. Managing different diets for every person in the house just seems like a recipe for a meltdown on my part. I just want to focus on giving both kids as much time and energy as possible and avoid exposing LO2 to any more allergens.

Aw, your poor LO. Yes, that sounds like a dairy reaction. My LO's diapers also went from mustard yellow to green and slimy to flecked with blood (looked like coffee grounds) from birth to about 6 weeks. Luckily once we dropped dairy and soy, things got so much better. Hope the same happens for you and your LO.

background- my LO is 4 weeks old and I've been exclusively pumping with the occasional random nursing thrown in since we left the hospital.

in the last 4 days, her poops went from mustard yellow to progressively greener and slimy with mucus and she got fussier and gassy. At first I thought it could be a foremilk / hindmilk and/or overfeeding issue because she was drinking bottles FAST and I have been engorged too much lately due to missing pumps (toddler!)
but still pumped more than enough easily for her.

THEN, I wondered about a food allergy or intolerance, as my son has food allergies.

Based on that (here's where I majorly F-ed up) I thought I would try formula (normal milk based Honest Company) for a day and see what happened. (I didn't really think it could be a dairy issue, I was thinking about my son's allergies to wheat and nuts)....

What happened is she still feels bad, is sleeping less than ever and crying more than ever, and her diapers are green and mucousy AND have streaks of blood in the mucus now and some huge chunks, almost like chewing gum (milk solids?).

Does this sound like MSPI to you? When she was getting breastmilk I was having a tiny bit of dairy - like on cereal and in coffee.....but obviously the formula is like "hi, here's a ton of milk"........

Just stressing now and waiting for morning so I can take her (and the weirdest grossest diaper ever) to the pediatrician.
