I think it is going to vary so much depending on the baby and the level of their intolerance. My first couldn't tolerate dairy back into my diet until about 10 or 11 months. I would definitely start small though, just trace amounts of big dairy and give it a few days to see how baby does.

@meadow: I thought that coming through the breastmilk and then being digested by baby there would be much less milk proteins than if the baby ate the dairy directly. idea being that they begin to build up a tolerance to the dairy in small amounts rather than testing directly when they start solids.

I found it more difficult to tell if there was a reaction once they started eating food. It's harder to see poop changes and you don't necessarily know if any digestive issues are because of what you ate or what he ate. So my suggestion is to either wait until he is used to eating a couple different foods or before you introduce it. You may want to start with soy because it stays in the system for a much shorter time. Good luck!

We tried to introduce a little back into my diet at 6 months and he still reacted so we waited until 9 months and had a blood allergy test done (because his reaction was fairly strong with blood, mucous and pain). At the negative allergy test, we started to introduce it in solids first (cheese and then yogurt). When he didn't react, I went back on dairy and then we eventually switched him over to a dairy based formula (I was supplementing with Alimentum).

@meadow: that I ate. I absolutely love cheese. I wanted to enjoy the few bites of cheese that I could.

I found that I could have cheese before he could, so it made sense to start with me.

@Kbee: yes...3-4 days is much better than 3-4 weeks!!! So would you say you ate more or less than a stick of string cheese?

My son was MSPI and I tested some re-introduction at 6 months. I was really worried too, so I only ate a little bit of cheese once per day, two days in a row. His eczema and reflux appeared very noticeably the evening of the second day. Because I had eaten so little, his reactions weren't as bad as they had been and it only took about 3-4 days for him to be completely back to normal. I know that sounds like a lot, but it was much quicker than the original elimination!

@MrsADS: thanks. My DS was not super severe. He had bloody diapers, diaper rashes, and excessive puking attributed to the MSPI. I was honestly surprised she told me to start now as we are only 2 months into the diet & figuring out his issues.

@Bernieboo: I don't haveven any allergies myself ....but good thing to think of.

@abbydabbydoodlebug: That's awesome!!!!!!!!

@Pollywog: are those foods you gave your LO'S? or that you ate?

@FannyMae: I had always thought we would wait for him to be ready for dairy products and have him try them vs me as I read it will clear faster if he still has the intolerance.

@meadow: how severe was his initial reaction? My LO had quite bloody mucousy green stools when I would eat a significant level of dairy (bowl of ice cream, chocolate, cheese , yoghurt) but she was ok if I had minimal amounts like milk in tea or butter on toast. Her paediatrician asked me to keep the minimal dairy in my every day diet just to get her used to it, as it was not showing any obvious reaction. I was told at 6 months to introduced cheese or yoghurt in her solids as it was easier for her to digest, and she ate it with no reaction at all. Now happily eats cows milk in food and can tolerate all dairy well - just haven't tried cows milk as a drink yet.

If his initial mspi reaction wasn't too intense, I would suggest that style of minimal dairy introduction into your diet to monitor his response.

We are 10 months in and have done several trials. I tried a few bites of hard cheese or a muffin made with butter. 3 hours later you'll have GI symptoms or will be happily fine. If fine, try again for 3 days in a row . J normally reacts on the 3-4 day and it takes 5 days to clear.

My DD was mspi and my pedi recommended the same thing to me at her 6 mo check up. I did baked dairy, yogurt, cheese, then ice cream. I waited a few days between each try and tried them in that order. She ended up having no reaction and I could reintroduce everything back into my diet! After that, I started giving her dairy in that order, waiting a few days in between.

Good luck!

Do you have any food allergies? We just got this diagnosis for our 2 month old. But when we found out, I talked to my allergist about it... I have bad food allergies (anaphylactic reaction to ingestion, not exposure, to melon, msg, and barley). Because of that, she said she wasn't comfortable with any challenges until 12 months. If this is a factor for you, it's something to consider.

@meadow my son had very severe MSPI (and intolerance to other things) - symptoms were very severe reflux (hospitalized/ER a few times), and the usual blood/mucus in the stool. Because of the severity of his reactions, his GI doctor recommended I not intro anything until he turned 12 months and had a negative blood allergy test.

I then did small amounts - like cooked butter or baked in dairy. Then increase to small amounts of cheese, etc. A tiny bit at a time. I wouldn't go full into a big glass of milk or something.

Although depending on the severity of the reaction, I might wait a few more months honestly! I would have been super nervous at 6 months!

I tried to reintro soy at 12 months which was a fail. Now at 15 months I've reintroduced soy and dairy and things are going great for us!

My son has MSPI (he is EBF) and at our 6 mo check up our ped suggested I try reintroducing a bit of dairy into my diet to see how he responds.

Those who have done this ..... any tips? What's a good place to start?

I have been strict about no milk/dairy products or soy proteins (ate soy lechtin and soybean oil).

Also nervous if he's not ready that it will undo weeks of hardwork to get it out of my system. :bummed:
