@CakeLady: Oh man,, 2-3 wake ups is brutal. I think my plan for now is to treat any wake up before midnight the same way I would bedtime (cry, with 10 min checks) since I know he isn't hungry. Then post-midnight I'm going to just nurse him and put him down. If he is asleep then great, but if not, I'll let him cry (I would say with checks but I don't think he goes longer than 15 minutes total at that time). We are travelling this weekend, so when we get back next week I'll give serious thought to starting night weaning using the troublesometots.com method. I'll check back in and let you know how it's going. Good luck!

@Little Misters Mom: no advice but lots of sympathy here! Little guy is 22 weeks (also 18lbs), falls asleep in his own at bedtime but when he wakes up motn (usually 2-3 times) he is screaming, inconsolable, and nursing doesn't seem to help. He will eventually calm down if we hold/rock/nurse long enough but the second he hits the mattress screaming ensues again  we are thinking about sleep training for motn - though we never had to CIO for bedtime. So I'd also love any advice!

@Little Misters Mom: Yup! Though from experience I've realised that CIO is not a one time event... we first trained at 3.5 months and LO is almost 14 months and we have a night every couple of months where we have to let her cry again :(

@illumina: Thanks. I think you are probably right. I may just try to suffer through it until we're ready to night wean and get it all over at once. Sleep training and then nap training was so hard (but worth it!) and I just can't imagine doing it yet again for this, and then once more to night wean.

Gah, babies!

@Little Misters Mom: Yes, I think you may have to train for MOTN the same way as you did for him falling asleep. Especially if nursing to sleep is not working in the MOTN :(

@illumina: Yes, sleep trained so that he just gets put in his crib (no nursing or bouncing) and falls asleep on his own. If it is confusion over this, does that mean we need to do another round of "sleep training" for these wake ups (where I nurse him then let him CIO)? I just don't get the sudden change.

In terms of night weaning, I'm not really in a hurry. Our approach has been to let him take the lead, unless it becomes a problem the way his sleep crutches had. But at the same time, he's 18 pounds and has STTN sporadically but often enough that I know he's physically capable.

When you say he has been trained to fall asleep on his own, does that mean without nursing to sleep for both naps and at night? If so, could it be that it is confusing for him to expect to be nursed to sleep in the MOTN and maybe that needs to be something you work on?

I personally wouldn't look to night wean until closer to 6 months.

Hoping to get hive wisdom on what is going on with our 21 week old. He's been sleep trained to fall asleep on his own since 3 months, and we nap trained last month. He's STTN a number of times, but typically has one wake up a night to nurse. I'm fine continuing to nurse him once a night but two issues have suddenly developed in the past week.

First, he randomly wakes up very upset between 10 and 12 (asleep around 6:30). Second, he used to just nurse back down to sleep and I'd put him back in his crib. Now when I put him down he cries hard for at least 10-15 minutes. I've tried picking him back up to nurse longer, but after 2-3 attempts just let him cry. I don't understand what's going on, so I don't have any strategy here.

Is this the 4 month sleep regression coming a little late? He's is teething but has been for weeks, with no visible change lately. Is it time to night wean? I'm not against using CIO but I only want to let him cry if there is an actual purpose and it is temporary. Has anyone gone through something similar? Help!
