@Mrs. Goose: yes, try soy and keep avoiding dairy too. My gi recommended dairy, then soy, then egg., then I forget..

Weight gain isn't great for two weeks-6 ounces. I've been dairy free for two weeks and have seen no improvement yet. The mucous in the diapers is basically the only symptom and the doctor is being pretty chill about it which is pretty annoying to me. I'm wondering if I should give soy a go?

If she is gaining weight ok and is otherwise happy and normal, I wouldn't worry too much about it. My DD2 had some mucousy BMs for awhile around that time. I asked about it at one of her well-checks, but the doc said that it's just a sign of an immature digestive system and/or maybe a slight intolerance to something, but that it could take forever to figure out exactly what it was (if you ever did), and since she was happy, it probably wasn't worth it. I could've still tried to eliminate the major culprits from my diet, but I agreed it wasn't really worth it. It went away after a little bit!

For us it was a symptom of mspi (well actually he is intolerant to way more than just milk and soy but those are the worst). Our GI doesn't really care too much about mucus unless it's pretty bad. He said it's a sign of inflammation/reaction. My son's diapers looked like they were full of chewed bubblegum and snot- like when I pulled the diaper away from his bottom there were thick strands of mucus.

But we also had visible blood and other symptoms- very severe reflux and vomiting unresponsive to meds. Oh yeah, and inconsolable screaming.

I've been on a strict elimination diet since September.

My son was mspi and is most reactive to soy and my daughter is reactive to corn. Some mucous can be the bodies way of learning but lots of mucous and extended mucous tend to point to other issues. My daughter is a chunker and hasn't had weight issues. But it is obvious when she is reacting. The rotavirus vaccine is just the worst on my kids so my daughter only got one dose.

My ped was more concerned with her behavior. Because my daughter was acting totally happy and normal, he said to not worry about it. But if she started acting colicky or seemed to be in pain, then we can try something. But for us it never progressed further than mucous and green stool (no pain or blood, etc.).

DS had this with Microscopic blood also. It was MSPI, he's also a reflux baby and would scream non stop for hours his first 6 weeks. I don't know which really caused the screaming because he was put on special formula (alimentum) and Nexium at the same time at 3 months now he's doing waaayyy better. Definitly sounds like textbook milk protein intolerance.

@skipper2010: I'm breastfeeding and I cut dairy just over a week ago to see if it will help. We're seeing the doctor again next week so I'll see what he says. I asked about a milk protein intolerance and he said there were no other symptoms so it was unlikely.

When did your daughter get diagnosed?

This happened to my daughter and she was diagnosed with a milk protein allergy. Are you BF or FF? If breast you may have to eliminate dairy to see if that helps. If FF there are hypoallergenic formulas out there. I would put another call out to your pedi and let him know that it's persisting.

Does anyone have experience with mucous in their baby's stool? It has been happening for about a month now. I first noticed it after her 4 month shots and her poo turned green. Two weeks after that it was still going on and I went to the doctor and said I was concerned. He said everything was fine and I requested she be weighed. I'm going for another weight check next week and I have some pictures of the poo to show him because I misplaced my phone last time and I feel like he didn't believe me. Sometimes it looks like yellowy/clear snot in her diaper and other times it is mixed in with the poo in strands. It is not really green anymore like it was it was in the two weeks post vaccine, but the mucous is always there in different amounts.

She got a cold a week after her shots, but it went away quickly and recently started teething (a few days ago I noticed a tooth has just come through).

I'm going a bit crazy over analyzing, but I feel this is not normal. Aside from this and a slow weight gain (started slowing after two months) she is a very happy typical baby.
