I've seen people online use these so they can offer water access but not have it be an unlimited stream-assuming your kid turns off the faucet.

@looch: yes!!! I was thinking about how to get water back there, I plan on putting it where the hose can't reach (we have a big yard), so that's a good idea!

I had one as a child, some of my favorite memories were made there. It was basically a potting bench, I had a bunch of cast off buckets and cake pans from my mom. The biggest thing I remember was different kinds of sand for the decorating.
Also, water was always a problem, I was always trying to get water from the hose and my mom went bananas about it. So, I would try to get one of those inexpensive water cooler things in plastic and leave that out.

We don't, but the kids love to collect things from around the yard and make soup or potions in a big tub. They just use sticks to stir and it's pretty low maintenance.

I tried setting up a tiny one but my daughter wasn't really interested yet. I used bricks to close off a small area surrounding the drain spout and put out a bunch of natural things like seed pods and pine cones for her to explore and we bring out little dishes and spoons but she usually prefers a basin of water. I hope she gets into the idea next year!

We have a mud pit! Just our garden that didn't grow. They have lots and pans. Mostly the little guy likes running water (slow turned on hose).
