@Mommy Finger: thanks! We are really pleased with the way they turned out. The pictures are from before we had handles and I had organized it.
I had originally designed a “locker” type layout on the two opposite walls but this ended up being a much better storage solution. Give lots of thought to everything you want to store in there so you end up with the right configurations

@Mommy Finger: I kept meaning to respond to your post. I vote add doors! We finished our mud room in our new house using IKEA kitchen cabinets that my husband installed himself. The one on the left as an outlet inside and a plug where we have our dyson stick vac charger. The middle one has a clothing bar and we hang any extra coats. There are pull out baskets underneath for hats, gloves, scarfs, extra shoes, etc. Our day to day coats and shoes are on the other side of the mud room on hooks. The cabinet on the far right is storage for outdoor play items, seasonal decor and just has shelves with storage bins. I am so happy with how it all turned out and know we made the right choice by putting doors even though I like the styled look of cubbies.

@Mommy Finger: I may regret the doors- we'll see. Right now this is the entrance for everyone, so there is no avoiding this mess. Our new house will have a separate family entrance through the garage, and then front door for guests- so the mudroom will be tucked away (plus there will be a lot more storage in other places for stuff, which we do lack now).
One thing I will say is make the room as big as you can. Everyone getting dressed in snow stuff, setting out an accordion drying rack for wet clothes- its a busy area. I will 100% have a utility sink in our new mudroom, too.

@Silva: Thank you, thank you, thank you for your picture!!!! The placement of your doors and the size of the lockers pretty much match exactly our space and gives me so much perspective. And the idea of putting outlets in each space is genius!

we have open cubbies currently and in our next house we're going to put doors on them. the mess is always visible right now and i hate it. we're planning on cubbies up top and a big drawer below for (dry) shoes. will put an outlet in each one for charging devices. kids can hang their backpacks and whatever coats in. Ours will be on the larger side, we live somewhere with intense winters and each person has about 5 coats. will also have a separate coat closet for stuff we don't need daily. With the open cubbies there is no way for it to look nice except for the 10 minutest after I organize and hang everything up.

I saw this one from a blog. They essentially have two lockers (made from cabinets I believe), one for kids and one for adults so they could tailor them for each use better. Looks super nice, though I haven't used one myself

@periwinklebee: I pinned your picture for inspiration :)

@JennyPenny: Your concerns about the doors are the same as mine as it would be me and the two boys leaving every morning at the same time and I would be concerned about the two of them fighting! However, I was hoping we could get an extra cubby in there to house our cleaning items (mops and vaccum) as we don't really have a good place to put them now so a door would help with that. I guess it wouldn't hurt to have some and some. And for some reason I don't like the idea of a curtain.

@ilovepie: I don't mind barn doors either but they won't work in the space.

Ugh, seems like there's not going to be a perfect solution. Thankfully I have a little time to mull this over. Thanks for your suggestions!

We have a cube shelf for shoes and gear, a coat rack etc in our entryway. I am very tidy and minimal and have the kids pick up often but it's still just a dirty mess often. Especially this time of year.

I know barn doors are going out, but if I had space I'd build it all in behind one big door so that I could shut a door on the mess and enjoy the rest of the space. I agree that kids+lockers would probably not happen the way you want it to

ETA: to make my shoes fit, I rotate my shoes. Usually two pairs per season with dress shoes that I only wear on occasion stored elsewhere.

I think the doors would drive me nuts. Especially if multiple people tend to get home/leave at the same time and need to open the doors next to each other. What if you did one larger open space kind of like what @periwinklebee shared, and hang a curtain rod across the top. You could keep it open most of the time and then draw the curtains across the mess if needed?

ETA - actually, you could still have individual cubbies even with the curtains. Not sure why my mind ruled that out to start :P

@Mommy Finger: Image attached. My inspiration was actually a thread on hellobee from a year or two ago about coat closet conversion. It was initially a coat closet with bifold doors that had seen better days... so far we've loved it.

For shoes, I find the key is only having a small number of pairs out, so even if they're messy it's not too bad. We store out-of-season shoes (i.e. right now both boots and sandals are put away, as the weather isn't suitable for either). I keep my work shoes at the office since they are not comfortable for the walk from daycare there. In season shoes go in the lower baskets, but if shoes are wet/muddy, we leave them in the vestibule outside the door. It's small and no space for storing coats, etc - hence why we converted the coat closet - but it doesn't bother me to have a couple pair of shoes there that we wear constantly.

We have a bench with hooks and cabinets on the bottom so like in that pic instead of baskets on the bottom we have doors (like the top of that pic) i found a shoe rack from Walmart that fits perfectly in the bottom and that’s how we do shoes (doors closed lol)

@PinkElephant: Yes to the shoes! I'll be honest, I'm not as worried about the shoes for the kids as I have boys who maybe have 1-2 pairs in rotation. I'm more worried about DH and me!!!! I like the idea in the picture I posted of the basket where things can just be thrown in there easily. I think I'm more resigned to the fact that they're probably going to just be a mess on a day to day basis but at least there will be a place to throw them when we have company over! But I am all ears for anyone who has suggestions on what works best!!!!

@Mommy Finger: We are also working on a renovation that will include carving out a mudroom, and I think doors are a must. I agree that most photos you'll see online are so, so stylized. In reality, my kids each have multiple coats (winter coat! rain coat! dirty yard coat!) out at a time, a school bag, 1-3 sports bags per kid.....having things out looking pretty just isn't going to happen - we need the space to cram things :)

Have you thought about what you'll do with shoes? That's the biggest problem with our makeshift garage mudroom right now - the shoes end up everywhere. I have three shoe-loving girls ages 3.5, 6, and 7.5, and it's out of control.

We converted a coat closet into a built in with bench + cubbies above and below + hooks. No doors. I think it looks nice, we just have coats to hang on the hooks, keep outerwear in the bins, since nothing else goes there besides our outerwear, it stays reasonably neat. When or if this lockdown ever ends, we'll have bags as well, but hopefully that will stay relatively contained.

We have lockers without doors. The entire room is a massive explosion of coats shoes boots and dirt.

I think you could hide everything behind doors if the room at more than one purpose. Our mushroom is literally just for storing stuff as we come and go so it gets destroyed quickly. My kids are 6,4,2 and slobs though so I hope it will improve. Only the 6 year old can even reach the hooks. The baby dumps all the bins. 😂 it looks gorgeous when it’s all cleaned but it doesn’t last long. I think doors would help the situation!

We've decided to pivot from what work we were going to do on our house to make our 3 season room into more of a 4 season room so that we can create a sort of mud room area/drop zone for all of our stuff. Our garage currently walks right into our kitchen/tv room area and we don't have a good system for organizing our coats/shoes etc. so it's just chaos. And all of this craziness that's going on right now has made me want to prioritize this. So I talked to our contractor about what it would take and we're comfortable with the cost.

The one built in that he will need to do is create the mudroom "lockers" that I always see in pretty pinterest pictures but wanted to get all of your perspective on what would work best. It will be one big room that we will use for this drop zone purpose on one side but on the other side, we will have a dining table that we currently use when it's nice out (the room has a ton of windows) for meals as well as for parties. It's also the way we get to our back patio. In theory, I'd like to have doors on the lockers like in the picture to hide the mess but is that practical to think that my kids will take that actual step of opening and closing a door to make it look neat or are they more apt to just use the space if it's open? We need it to corral coats, backpacks, shoes etc.

Pinterest pictures are obviously so staged so want to see what things will be like in real life. Thoughts?
