I have been lurking here for over a year and just registered to respond to this post. After a six-year journey that included 5 miscarriages as well as long stretches of complete inability to conceive, I am now holding a healthy, energetic three month old. What finally worked for us was IVF with PGD -- on the first try. We did a few rounds of IUI, plus several months trying "naturally" with a really intense protocal meant to address a variety of supposed immunological and blood clotting issues. I was doing lovonox shots, infusions, prednisone -- all of it very stressful, and no pregnancy. Ultimately, the RE that got me pregnant told us that the immunogical red flags were a result of the miscarriages, not the cause. By the time I saw her, those issues were gone. She said most early losses like mine are genetic, and she recommended pre-implantation genetic screening to implant a healthy embryo. Out of 18 follicles, only 7 fertilized, only 2 made it to day 5, and only one was genetically normal. It only takes one... That was my baby girl!

They did full testing for me (I think it mostly focused on blood clotting disorders) after my second loss. It was at 5 weeks, so I was grateful no one said CP or dismissed it. Everything came back negative. After R, they tested DH and me both for common genetic issues that can cause hydrocephalus, but nothing there either. We now know all of it was probably caused by Ellers-Danlos Syndrome, which is a genetic disorder,, but I've not been tested. We just know my dad has it and it explains my history. I would insist on as much testing as possible. Two losses is not actually that unusual, but if there's anything causing it you'd certainly be happier knowing and being able to take action. I'm sorry again that you're going through all of this. Hugs!

I'm sorry for the delay in responding... I'm still trying to work through all of this and needed a small HB break.

@Banana330: I need to talk to my dr about prescribing P after O instead of waiting until a BFP. I'm really worried about how low my P levels have been.

@Smurfette: thank you for sharing. I really hope third time is a charm for us, these last 2.5 years have been the hardest of our 11 year relationship.

@Keybee: ugh, infertility is the worst, especially with RPL. Thank you for sharing, it gives me hope!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: thank you for sharing, I hope my new guy counts it too.

@Mrs.Someone: thank you for explaining that- I'll keep it on the list to ask about after I get a blood workup done. (Assuming he'll give me one).

@2PeasinaPod: I'm trying to switch OBs currently, but with the timing of the surgery, am struggling with insurance to get it done. So frustrating.

@Eko: ugh, you are exactly right. All of you ladies are so wonderful and supportive, but I wish none of us had experienced this. Is what you were prescribed like a clomid?

@travellingbee: did your bloodwork show a problematic AMH? Or did they think that based on the RPL?

@LulaBee: I am so, so sorry for everything you've been through. I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes uneventfully. ❤️ Thank you for the well wishes.

@ShootingStar: Thank you for saying that. I feel like chemicals are so often discounted, even though they truly are losses. I hope that my doctor takes us seriously and let's us do testing, I can't imagine going through this a third time before getting some answers.

@Tidybee: thank you so much for sharing your story. I'd love to wall you to ask a few more questions...

@Crystal: I'm so sorry for all the loss you've had to go through. And don't feel like because a loss was early that it wasn't still a loss. All chemical pregnancies are miscarriages. The "chemical" term refers to the fact that it can only be detected via chemical means. But it's still a miscarriage and still a loss.

My first pregnancy went to term (despite some scary bleeding) and DD is now 3. My second ended in MC at 9 weeks- midwife said it was amniotic band syndrome. I got pregnant again and had some very large bleeds, a very large SCH, and ended up in early labor at 23 weeks and my son was stilborn. When I found out I was pregnant 3 months after he died (surprise!), I went to MFM right away to get tested. I have a clotting disorder and am on Lovenox and baby aspirin. Thought everything was going okay with this pregnancy (aside from major stress/worry), but ended up being put on bed rest this past week due to cervix shortening. I'm 24 weeks. Hope to have a good outcome, but it's really hard for me to have any faith at this point. Hoping you get your sticky baby soon!

@runnerd: Hope that works for you! In the end the testing was completely useless for us. I don't remember the stats but I the doctor told me the testing more often then not finds nothing wrong. It was definitely discouraging. FX that things work out for you soon!

I also had two miscarriages in a row (one at 4.5 weeks and one at almost 7). They said it was likely egg quality and put me on CoQ10 and a few other supplements for a few months. I got pregnant 3 months after the 2nd miscarriage with the help of clomid and trigger.

Ok my story:
#1 - 12 cycles of ttc, no bfp. We ran all kinda of tests - all normal but progesterone was borderline and I always spotted by 12dpo indicating a low progesterone problem but progesterone after ovulation never helped me get pregnant. We did a round of clomid to strengthen the whole process and then did an IUI which failed. The next cycle, I took clomid but had the opportunity to meet DH in Paris after a work trip during the time I would have to go for IUI 2. I skipped the IUI for the trip and ended up getting pregnant in Paris! I also skipped progesterone that month bc I was so burnt out. DD is now almost 3!
#2 - got pregnant on first cycle NTNP. We were shocked because it took us sooo long to get pregnant with DD. That ended in a blighted ovum, diagnosed at 7 weeks and I had to have a D&c because my body was showing no sign of realizing there was no embryo growing.
#3 we took one cycle off after the D&c and then for pregnant the next time. At 6 weeks, doc confirmed I didn't have doubling hcg but there was a fetus growing with a strong heartbeat. At 10 weeks, we went for another ultrasound and the heart had stopped beating around the 8-9 week mark. I had another D&c for that because I wanted it out and over.
#4- we didn't wait for AF to return after the D&c and got pregnant again immediately. My hcg came back at 6 and I started bleeding a few days later, ruled a chemical pregnancy.
At this point, we saw an RE. We did some genetic testing and bloodwork and all kinds of tests for what could be causing the losses. My ob and re both thought it was all bad luck because of the different nature of the losses. All of my testing came back normal. My ob recommended taking a few months to let my
Body heal. I had deceloped shingles shortly after the chemical pregnancy so clearly my body was stressed.
We had a trip to Naples planned for our wedding anniversary. We decided to not try to get pregnant before that so we could relax and
Enjoy some drinks on the beach and not be worried about first trimester crap. I ended up ovulating on that trip. I got a bfp at 11dpo, rushed to the doc for hcg and progesterone. My progesterone was 13, the highest it had ever been but still borderline for pregnancy. I started on the suppositories that day. A week later, my hcg had almost tripled and progesterone was in the 30s. I had my second baby girl, my darling rainbow baby, 5 weeks ago.

@Crystal: *Hugs* I always said it feels like I'm part of a club I never wanted to join. I was prescribed crinone, which is a gel with an applicator. Feels almost like I was just lucky it worked. My doctor just told me it should make me more fertile but to see how it goes when he prescribed it. It definitely is hard to have it happen multiple times and we took multiple breaks between ttc, so overall it was a long journey for us. I hope your journey is not so long.

@Crystal: Lots of hugs. You know my story, but my 4th miscarriage was considered a chemical pregnancy, and they considered it a loss. Well, my RE did. My unsupported OB did not. He kept chalking it up to "bad luck" when I had a uterus lined with scar tissue.

I would hate for you to get to one more miscarriage, but if that happens, I'd switch REs. There could be a bunch of different factors that they might not have looked for earlier with multiple losses, so with the new information, they may be able to pinpoint the problem.

Sending lots of love

@Crystal: Lovenox is an injection blood thinner. A doctor won't prescribe it until you show a need for it (clotting disorder, etc.) I was on it throughout my whole pregnancy, and 4-5 weeks afterwards.

And yes, I knew abut having a thyroid issue for many years before being diagnosed with Hashimoto's. Something like 90% of hypothyroidism is Hashi's, and it does cause miscarriages. My antibodies have always been pretty low, but I have several different things that all stack up on eachother. Unfortunately, before even TTC again, I'll have to head back to the MFM for more testing and likely start Lovenox again.

Sending good thoughts!! I hope you have a healthy baby soon.
I've been off birth control since January of 2012. Miscarried at 10 week the following December, lost another March of 2013 and didn't get pregnant again until March of 2015 (unexplained infertility) 25 weeks along and baby is still alive in there!
Being pregnant again is scary and we worry a lot about her making it full term. I just do my best to keep her healthy and to be greatful for this pregnancy.

My good friend had 3 miscarriages in a row. The went to a specialist. Turns out her blood was thinning so it was causing the miscarriages. She start progesterone and another shot right after she ovulated. Got pregnant the first time. LO is about to turn 2. She is due any day now with #2 and did the same procedure.

@Crystal: nope my OB prescribed baby aspirin. I just picked it up over the counter. I started it daily after my post d&c check up and continued until 32weeks. I did find I bruised a bit easier on it but that's to be expected. Progesterone was three days after O until 14 dpo or 11 weeks. But that was by prescription.

@LovelyPlum: did you just buy some baby aspirin from the store? I have some left over from my "kitchen sink" cycles, I wonder if I should start taking it every day... I feel like a major problem of mine is P, which this new dr was already talking about in the emergency room, so I'm glad he takes that seriously. Did they do anything special for you because of the RPL in terms of extra appointments or ultrasounds?

@magnolia: thank you for the love and support. I had an HSG in November of last year, which showed a small polyp that was removed in Feb. my OBGYN said that it was small and shouldn't have interfered with fertility. Do you think I need another one?

@MaryM: I've been on the lookout for a good doc, and they are so hard to find. I never had an ultrasound with the first (just exams and bloodwork), so I'm not sure what they'd say. Either way, the loss is on record, so I hope they take it seriously. ❤️

@Eko: what type of P were you on? (pills, shots, suppositories?) I kept hearing I'll be more fertile after and the chances of repeat miscarriages are lie, yet here I stand. I've never wanted to be less special in my whole life.

@Mrs.Someone: thank you for sharing your story.. I kept hearing about love box, but have no idea what it is. I should look into it. I'm seeing an acupuncturist that specializes in fertility issues, and I think she's played a big roll in helping me. I am so frustrated by our IF issues, there doesn't seem to be a reason it's happening!!! Everything looks good, aside from both of us needing to lose some weight (which we have been working on). Did you have any indications of any thyroid problems before your Hashemites diagnosis? My Dr tested me for PCOS, but I don't fit any of the parameters.

@jaguar: my fingers are crossed so hard for you... I don't know why some of our roads seem to be so long and hard adding IF on top of our challenges just seems so unfair. ❤️

@Banana330: did you prescribe yourself the baby aspirin? When did you start taking it? (after/before O? After BFP?)

Thank you to everyone sharing your stories, it makes me feel a little better to hear many of you have your take home babies. I hope to be a success story someday.

@blackbird: did insurance cover your testing? I'm trying for a new dr, so I hope the new guy will be in our corner. I hope some simple supplements will help.

@mrs.kiwi: thank you! I'll probably want to wrap myself in bubble wrap for the next pregnancy- I feel like I was already trying to take it easy this time!

@littlejoy: thank you. You are right, I feel so alone... I don't even feel changed after last week, though I should. I just feel like it's a part of the continual hell we've been in, and there's no end in sight.

So sorry for your losses.

I had an early natural mc in jan 2014, a chemical in feb 2014, mc @8weeks with twins in April 2014. D/c in April 2014. Started on progesterone and baby aspirin in June 2014 found out I was pregnant in August 2014 due in April 2015. Everything went great with that pregnancy and I just fed my DD  .
they tried for tissue testing from the d/c but they couldn't get a good sample to test with but the progesterone and aspirin worked for me. It felt long and frustrating at the time but oh so worth it now.

*hugs* Our loss at 6 weeks was considered an early miscarriage. I know it doesn't make much difference - a loss is a loss - but I felt comforted having that acknowledged.

No success stories here (yet) but maybe one day? :)

<3 to you, the almost 2 years of TTC was some of the hardest I've ever gone through. I haven't shared my story here in a while...

After 9mo of trying, I went to see an acupuncturist and got pregnant the first full cycle. I miscarried 2 days after my missed period. Tried again for a few cycles, then started seeing a naturopath. She tested for a few things, and found I have MTHFR mutations and hashimoto's. On first full month of treatment with her, I got pregnant again (6mo after the first loss), and lost it at 5.5 weeks. I was devastated, and felt so broken. The naturopath then started RPL testing, found a few "gray area" autoimmune issues. I also had a consult at an RE (which sucked BTW). Eventually I found someone with a similar story to mine and she led me to a MFM in the area who reviewed my results and suggested Lovenox starting a few days after ovulation. I got pregnant right away again, and it stuck. My son just turned 1 a week ago.

It seems that my issue was implantation, not sperm meets egg. I'm pretty sure there was at least one more loss in there (I think I saw the tissue).

I'd really encourage you to get testing. I don't think 2 in a row happens as a coincidence, but unfortunately most people don't find the cause of their losses. Because you've also been dealing with IF, there is likely something going on. Here's a great link that helped me understand MC causes:
http://www.acfs2000.com/basic_services/repeated-pregnancy-loss-habitual-abortion.html

Let me know if you want any more info on where to go next. And as someone else said, if your doctor isn't willing to help or take it seriously, find another one who will! Feel free to reach out to me anytime. Seems that the IF boards have died down around here...

I had two losses. First was at 10 weeks that resulted in a d&c and second was at 6 weeks and I miscarried on my own. I guess you could call the second a cp, but I don't like to. With the d&c they tested the tissue and everything came back fine and I was told it happens a lot with women and usually results in a success pregnancy the second time. After my second miscarriage I saw a specialist and went through a series of bloodwork and saline ultrasound and it all came back normal. DH was fine too.

I was prescribed baby aspirin, progesterone, and clomid because they didn't have a real answer. After two months I decided to go off clomid and the next cycle I got pregnant just on the aspirin and progesterone and my son is now sleeping in my arms.

It can be very frustrating if doctors can't give you an answer to such a devastating situation. But it does still work out for many women.

Just logging in to say I love you!

And a chemical pregnancy is before five weeks I think (before the gestational sac is identifiable). I'm pretty sure your first loss is still considered a clinical miscarriage.

If doctors do minimize your losses, maybe keep looking for a new doctor. You deserve to be listened to and taken seriously.

@Crystal: first off, so much love to you, and so sorry for your losses.

I had my first mc "naturally" (no d&c needed) at 6 weeks in summer 2011. Ob did an ulrasound, only saw a small fibroid and no identifiable cause.

Took a break from trying for many reasons, started trying again summer of 2012, got pregnant again Dec 2012. Had a missed mc discovered at 12 week ultrasound, had D&C.. Ob did tissue testing, came back normal. OB decided to do a saline ultrasound, where they fill the uterus with water to get more of a dimensional image, discovered what he thought was a uterine polyp. In June 2013 i had a hysteroscopy (surgery with tiny camera inserted vaginally to inspect uterus) to remove the polyp and a uterine septum (wall in the uterus) was discovered and removed.

This was the cause of my multiple m/c. Dr was surprised I was even able to get pregnant. happily i got pregnant in spring 2014 and my almost 9 month old son is sleeping soundly right now.
eta: I also learned in my successful pregnancy that i have the MTHFR mutation.

If I were you I would definitely ask for a saline ultrasound and or HSG to check for uterine and ovarian abnormality, especially since it sounds like other issues have already been reviewed? sorry for so much detail but maybe it will help. Feel free to wall me.

I've had two early natural losses (4 and 6 weeks) and was diagnosed with RPL. We never found a reason why, but we did a couple of things that i think led to me eventually having success. 1) I had an HSG the cycle after my second loss. It found nothing abnormal, but I bled a TON afterwards. My doctor said that I probably needed a good clean out after 2 unsuccessful pegnancies. 2) My doc put me on baby aspirin and progesterone as soon as I got pregnant. I had to up the progesterone several times during the course of the pregnancy to prevent spotting. But I really think the baby aspirin had a big effect. 3) I started a GF diet and stayed away frOm foods that caused inflammation during the month after my HSG and during the early part of my pregnancy.

I don't know why my baby eventually stuck around, but I think it had to do with the aspirin and doing what we could to reduce inflammation . She gave us all sorts of scares throughout my pregnancy in the form of bleeding and lots of cramps, but she was always, always perfect. She's 16 months and a firecracker now.

Sending you hope and hugs

I've had two natural losses now (no tissue testing), and my midwives have me listed as RPL. When we are TTC, they will take my MTHFR mutations and two previous losses into consideration for prescriptions to maintain pregnancy. Between the two losses, I got pregnant and delivered a healthy baby.

My heart is with you. Loss is so hard. Navigating these waters feels isolating. We are all here for you ... to encourage you and share your joys!
