When I had mine done, they didn't want to take all four at once. The bottom two had started to wrap around the nerves, and there was a risk they could do permanent nerve damage when they removed them. So they took the top two and one of the bottom ones. The theory was that if there was nerve damage, at least it would only be on one side, and if not they could do the last one later. I had no nerve damage, and the recovery really wasn't bad. I ate a lot of mashed potatoes and soup. I think my main complaint was that I prefer to drink out of straws for everything, and I couldn't.

@Mrsbells: They told me there were stitches, but I couldn't feel anything, so I couldn't tell you. I think they were dissolvable, too. The most important thing was just to keep up with the salt water rinses and to really follow directions on taking care of them those first few days.

I had four impacted wisdom teeth removed in one shot. My dentist recommended I have it done to avoid future problems. I chose to get it over with all at once.

I was awake, and I was given valium for the procedure. I didn't feel a thing, but the sound of them being pulled out was a little unnerving.

I didn't want to miss much work, so I had it done on a Friday afternoon, I didn't have much swelling, but I spent most of the weekend in bed because the painkillers knocked me out. I was just a little too sore and achey without them, so I gave in to it. I also iced my cheeks a lot when I was awake.

I intended to go to work on Monday, but decided to call in sick because I realized I couldn't function well at work all day with the residual pain or with the painkillers. I was more or less back to normal by Tuesday, but still had to be careful what I ate to keep the little holes clean and comfy. (Rice is a very bad idea, I discovered. The grains are the exact size of the hole, and a pain to fish out.)

@Mommytotwois: for me at least the gap completely disappeared! my other molars moved up and are right next to my canines now. It actually helped so much because I had a lot of crowding with other teeth, so this just gave my mouth a little bit more room.

I had all four removed at the same time a year ago- I was eating "normal" food (not chips or other crunchy food though) the next day, and felt 100% after about 4 days. I had general anesthesia (which I had never had before so I was freaked out about that) but all was well

@Mrsbells: Ooops, didn't mean to scare you!!! I think there are just risks, like with any kind of surgery. I get the impression these are pretty RARE, but my dentist warned us of the possibility of permanent numbness or paralysis in the jaw, which TOTALLY FREAKED ME OUT. But I'm guessing the risk of that is REALLY slim - I've actually never heard of that happening to someone! I'm sure you'll be fine!!! <3

ETA: I suspect the risk of other complications KEEPING teeth you can't keep clean is MUCH higher! Gum disease and heart disease are HUGE issues with teeth and much more likely than the risks of having them removed!

I had three and had them pulled in my early 20's. They were pulled on a Friday and I was back at work on Monday. I was put under and it was not a big deal at all. I barely swelled and felt fine after the first day. I made sure to set my alarm all night the first couple of nights so that I didn't miss a pain pill, though.

@Mrsbells: Well, being impacted probably doesn't help. I think if you are having trouble keeping them clean and free of cavities, then getting them removed is probably a good idea. I've been able to keep on top of mine, so I plan to keep them, but if I kept getting cavities in them, I'd probably have them removed.

Thanks everyone for sharing your experiences, it makes me a feel a bit better knowing so many others have 4 wisdom and had them removed easily

@Adira: See I have also been refusing/ delaying having mine removed, but now my new dentist is really insisting I do it, she says if I don't do it I will keep getting cavities in them and after a while they wont be able to fill the cavities and then I will need to have the tooth removed anyway and by then it might have caused other problems.. so she has scared me into atleast going to see the oral surgeon about it.

I had 4 wisdom teeth, so far only 1 has been removed. It was in the middle of my second trimester while pregnant and just 1 tooth was causing me pain, so I only had that 1 removed under local anesthesia. Originally, my plan was to get all 4 removed under general anesthesia, but that wasn't an option while I was pregnant. I have to say, having the 1 removed was no big deal! I had minimal swelling and didn't even have to take any painkillers at all afterwards. It was done on a Wednesday morning and I could have worked from home, but just took the day off. I was totally normal looking in the face after a few hours. I will probably just have the other 3 removed under local anesthesia now that I know it wasn't so bad for the 1. But, none of mine are impacted, which I imagine makes a difference.

I have all four and I refuse to let them be removed! :) But mine are not impacted and I have room in my mouth for them. Dentists keep trying to insist I remove them just because they're "hard to reach" and "harder to clean" but I'm not getting rid of them just because of that. I had a few cavities in them when I was younger, but I've been doing a pretty good job at keeping them clean lately, so I'm going to keep them!

I only had 2. but I got them both removed in high school by an oral surgeon. They were both still impacted.

But I also have an abnormally small mouth so I also needed to get first molar behind my cuspid/canine (the "pointy teeth) removed because I just literally didn't have enough room in my mouth! So I only have 3 molars together, when people normally have 4 + wisdom teeth. :-) Fun fact about me!!
