My sister has one, she also has two small kids (3 & 1) - they have a safety latch at the top to be sure!

I think they are perfectly safe. As pps have said, I have a couple of friends who have them and they are an amazing way to have a real bed that doesn't take up space.

My parents have one, and the latches are all the way at the top. I can barely reach them (I'm on the short side but much taller than a child). It also takes some force to pull it down.

A couple of my friends live in studio apartments with Murphy beds, and the latches are pretty high up. Also, they don't just fall down, they're on pressure springs so you have to actually pull them down from a handle near the top. I think as long as you get a good quality one with safety features like this, they're perfectly safe.

We have a Murphy bed in dd's room. She has never once tried to open the cabinet, but if she did, we would put a baby lock on the handles. Additionally, ours doesn't just fall down once opened, you have to pull pretty hard to get it down. It has springs for this specifically as a safety measure. So I wouldn't worry about it.

Our new house has 3 BR, so most likely we will not have a dedicated guest room (I am TTC and the house is a total rehab- so even if I am not yet pregnant when we do move in, we will still need a room for tile cutting, storing tools, etc.)

It also has a loft we are enclosing and making the playroom, and a basement that we will be semi-finishing. DH is adamant we get a Murphy Bed for one of these rooms, mostly so his parents can stay with us (that's a whole other topic!)

My question is- are these safe with young kids? DS can easily open our fridge and counter freezer, so I can totally see him opening the bed cabinets and having it fall on him. Please let me know if I'm correct or being overly cautious... either way, I think a better investment would be a nice, comfortable sleeper sofa for the basement that will work as a guest area now, and as a rec room down the road when we are done with a playroom.
