@cat620: I would definitely say something. Not everyone cares about it but I'm super uncomfortable with some of kids listening to some of the popular songs that have suggestive lyrics

@peachykeen: Yes - from Sing. I hate it. DD repeats that line at inopportune times and I cringe. Then I really cringe because I remember singing the whole song to my parents when I was in 4th grade. I had learned the lyrics from girls in my Girl Scout troop at a weekend camp out. And my parents asked me to explain what 'sprung' was. 🤦

@erinbaderin: Yes! They have this song in the Sing movie, I think! My 4yo has wanted to watch it because her friends like it, but I can't get past some of the songs they use.

I would bring it up, along with volume. We've had to make comments at daycare/preschool picnics about the DJ volume, as it's always so unnecessarily loud for little ears. I would maybe make a list of suggested songs. My 4yo has just discovered JoJo Siwa, and (although she makes me a little crazy) she's pretty innocent. Preschoolers all seem to like baby shark, and my 1yo has randomly fallen in love with the 'what does the fox say' song!

I would probably bring it up. My four year old has been going around for the past few months going "Oh. My. God. Look at her butt." He said it's from a song they had dance parties to at daycare. It makes me crazy.

So my husband was at an event with my toddler. Love Shack cane on and my toddler has been obsessed with the song for two months. It's totally not appropriate, but is also a song I wouldn't have thought twice about.

I would probably bring it up. In planning my wedding we worked with our DJ to make sure the songs were appropriate for all ages. It was no big deal for him, he just hadn't thought about some of the lyrics before

What about a band instead of a DJ? Not sure how flexible that is but we’ve been to a couple kids/family friendly events and they always have these cool bands that play their own stuff and are local small businesses. I agree that kids versions of the songs are so grating but I would be thinking WTF if I heard ‘blurred lines’ at a kids/family event. Maybe if it has to be a DJ you could have a ‘do not play’ list like you can do with wedding DJ services and clearly stuff that is overtly sexual or not family friendly gets put on the list?

This is so hard. SOOOOO many pop song lyrics are super questionable when you really listen to them, but they're also DS's favorite songs... I go back and forth on this all the time. I would probably bring it up at the PTA meeting as a discussion matter and take everyone's temperature, then you can go from there. I'd imagine if you switch completely to kid music you'd get complaints that the music at the festival was annoying... so it's probably a bit of a no-win situation.

@Corduroy: I totally agree.

We've been to a few elementary school events with a DJ and I've totally side-eyed the music selection at every one. If I was on the committee I'd want to ask about the DJ keeping the audience in mind.

What about switching to the kidz bop versions? I am not conservative about anything, but a lot of pop music lyrics are undesirable (even what I listen to!) and kidz bop cleans everything right up.

@cat620: I think I would say something if I was on the PTA board already. We had a winter dance at DD's elementary school and I was surprised by the music. It's the same stuff as the radio but I found it kind of gross. I guess I'm officially old. I didn't say anything to the school but if I was on the dance committee next year or had some oversight I think I would say something about future selections.

To me this isn't a big deal, but I know for others it is. So I definitely think it's worth mentioning, particularly if it's in a way that makes it clear that you're just raising it for discussion.

I'm on the PTA for the preschool my kids go to, and every year they do a big spring festival where they hire a DJ and other entertainers. We went last year, and my husband made a comment that he thought the music was inappropriate for a preschool festival. Keep in mind these kids are all between 2 and 5 years old. The music included "Blurred Lines," a couple Pitbull songs and other popular songs.

Now that I'm on the PTA board this year, I'm thinking about bringing it up before we start planning the spring festival, but first I wanted to hear from others to make sure I'm not being unreasonable. Nobody seemed to mind the music at the festival, but I can see how some of the lyrics aren't exactly kid appropriate. Would you say something to the board about changing the music, or do you think it isn't a big deal?
