@Mrs Green Grass: you should do a guest blog post!!! There are so many posts about hospital bags for general childbirth but none for NICU.

Hand lotion was important. I'd put it on multiple times while I was grabbing lunch or dinner outside the NICU. The frequent hand washing took a toll on my skin it stared to crack and bleed.

This might sound silly and obvious but a water bottle! I was drier than the sahara in those first few weeks and could NOT drink enough water. They didn't allow food for obvious reasons but a huge water bottle was a life saver. I also agree with slippers. Anything that makes you feel comfortable...

I found a medium sized cooler and ice packs to be very handy. I went home to sleep at night but still was pumping every 3 hours so I needed something to carry the milk to the hospital in every morning. The NICU gave us a soft sided cooler which worked pretty well.

We were only there for a few days, but my favorite thing was my big fluffy robe. I was so stressed, and it was a big comfort even when I started wearing normal clothes again. I felt more comfortable doing skin to skin and practicing breastfeeding wearing that instead of a cover since I could see him better but feel less exposed.

In honor of the new NICU board, I thought I'd share some expertise! These were some essential items for me while lo was in the NICU. Please share yours below.

1) Boppy - You will be feeding you lo...probably in a rocker. The Boppy makes it so much easier and more comfortable!

2) Pumping Supplies - If your lo was born closer to term, you might be successfully breastfeeding, but most many moms of preemies must pump. The NICU should provide pump parts, but get a Nursing Cover (I like Bebe au Lait) and a Hands-Free Bra. These are ESSENTIAL!

3) Wubbanub - If you lo is in an open crib, the paci will end up on the floor all the time. Since my lo was a 25-weeker, we would always get a new one. Wubbanubs stay put easier (and are so cute!)

4) Baby Mirror - You can't always be there with your lo which is hard. Get a mirror for them to look at. They love it! I got a penguin one which lo adored.

If you are staying long-term like I did, you might want an infant tub, play-mat, and some toys. I also had a lovey for him and tons of A & A blankets and snap up sleepers (so all of the cords can fit through).
