You are a good writer - I had no problem following along!

That sounds... traumatic. The care, more-so than the actual delivery. Sounds like you and your husband did great together though!

I agree that a strongly worded letter is in order. No one should be made to feel so helpless during such an important and vulnerable time. Wishing you much love and healing

OMG!! That sucks you had no sleep because you're in a room full of laboring women. I'd go crazy!! You're so sweet for soothing the lady next to you.

I too had "convulsions" during my labor even though I had an epidural. I didn't understand why either, but my birth photographer told me it meant I was really close and the good stuff is about to happen. haha!

Congratulations and she's a cutie!

@LMOG47: Yup. If you're not being induced and you turn up at the hospital in labour, you go straight into the single occupancy room on the labour ward. If you are not far enough along to warrant a bed on labour ward, they send you home until you reach a certain point (or until your water has been broken for 24 hours and is an infection risk). At my hospital, it looks like this (scary, huh?!) but they've just opened up a swish new "birthing centre" with pools in some of the rooms. I can never give birth there though because I will always be considered high risk. Sob sob.

Also, I think a strongly worded letter is the LEAST you should do. Policy or not, that is not a way to treat a laboring (or any!) woman. You need to let them know!

@LMOG47: When you are in full blown labour (on the labour ward), they can stay throughout the whole thing but when you are on the wards (pre and post baby) they can only be there during visiting hours. It's because you're sharing a room with five other people. I had to stay in the following night and so DH had to leave us at 8pm. The other 5 babies - plus E - took it in turns to cry all night so it was another sleepless one: 5 nights with no sleep in total.

The others are right, you're a great story teller! And, she's absolutely adorable! I cannot even imagine how difficult that must have been, I was traumatized just reading about it. Some people just don't have any business being in healthcare. I had no idea that partners were only allowed during visiting hours in the UK, that's unheard of here in the states!

@Cherrybee: I laughed out loud at your snorkelling story, and I'm at my desk at work! haha. And I LOVE how your husband broke you out to go home for some sleep. That happened to my friend here in the states... her labor was progressing super slowly and she actually yelled at the doctors to let her go home. (she's a crazy sweet and accommodating person usually!) Then she labored at home for the next 24 hours! She actually dilated very quickly after starting to receive pitocin.. I think she went from 6-10 in a matter of 15 minutes!

Congratulations!!! What an amazing birth story. I'm so sorry for all the negative pieces (especially laboring alone and watching all those other women labor alone... I would NEVER have gotten through my labors without my husband and my multiple super helpful and sweet nurses) but wow, what a story. I was sure you were going to end up in C section, after such a long labor and so little sleep. Or even forceps. But you did it!! What a supermama!!!

@Cherrybee: you must complain. A lot of women feel they shouldn't because they came away with a healthy baby and feel they shouldn't complain. Your care sounds very, very poor and contrary to numerous NICE guidelines. At the time you were overwhelmed, completely understand, but you've been mistreated (literally).
