This is extremely normal. I remember going through it myself. Just rationalise it with her. This is also the time for imaginary friends. So tell her about the good stories and let her imagine a friend in this monster she has imagined. Nothing at all abnormal about this behaviour. I imagined monsters living under my bed.

@mrskansas: If you haven't watched Monsters, Inc. recently, you might want to preview it (or be ready to fast-forward certain scenes). When I watched it with my kids, there were some parts that were scarier than I remembered. While Mike and Sully are friendly monsters, some of their colleagues (Randall) are super mean and scary - both towards kids and towards other monsters.

D went through this for a while, but it was at bedtime and it was a ghost in his room. We used a spray but that didn't work too well. Then we started yelling at the ghost to go away - that was the recommendation of our pediatrician. So we would yell and clap our hands and say "Go away, ghost!" It made him laugh to yell at it, and then I would say, "Ok, I see him going away now! Bye-bye, ghost!" And then he'd be fine.

According to our 2-year-old there's an alligator in our house. It's not a huge deal but shell says things like "I can't, the alligator might get me." I'll normally tell her I'll make sure that doesn't happen or my husband that there isn't one, but no official meltdown over it.

As for why it started I remember reading her a book with an alligator and when we got to that page her baby brother started crying. I made some joke about being scared of alligators and I guess it grew from there?

We made Monster Spray - it's a regular spray bottle with water and a little bit of lavender, and I let B decorate it, and I drew a picture of a silly looking monster with a line through it. We also talk a lot about how the monsters are just grumpy and smelling the monster spray turns them friendly. If B says there's a monster I ask if it's a grumpy monster or a happy monster, and if he says grumpy I have a chat with the monster and make up a reason. "Hey, Monster, why are you grumpy? Oh no, your foot hurts? Do you want to go get a bandaid?" etc.

@babypugs: Thank you! Great suggestion.

@bubblegum: I am planning on picking up Monsters Inc tonight and watching it with her! I like the idea of monster spray too, that could be fun.

We talk a lot about how monsters are pretend and there is no such thing, so that helps, but there's also a really cute book called "Marilyn's Monster" (https://www.amazon.com/Marilyns-Monster-Michelle-Knudsen/dp/0763660116) that made my daughter love monsters! Monsters are presented in a loving, cuddly way rather than in a scary way. I was a little worried it would backfire talking about monsters so much, but it might be worth picking it up at the library to see if you think it would help her.

Over the past week or so my daughter (2.5) has been talking about a monster in our house. Last night it was really bad and she wouldn't go to the bathroom alone, kept hiding behind the couch and pointing down the hallway and wanting me to carry her everywhere.

I honestly have no idea where she got this from. My husband or I have never talked about "monsters" and the only thing she watches on TV is Paw Patrol. I've repeated to her that there are no monsters in the house, we've walked through all of the rooms together so she can see there's nothing there but it hasn't helped.

I laid in bed anxious about this for hours last night.. I don't know why it's worrying me so much, but it is!

Has anyone else gone through this? Any tips for helping her get over this?
