I'm following this too even though C is only 2.5 months. Her night time sleep once she is asleep is ok but it takes forever to get her to sleep and naps are totally unpredictable. I need to master drowsy but awake but I just don't have any idea how.

Will check out te weisbluth book. I'm also not opposed to a little CIO but think c is still too young. My nips can't take this much comfort nursing to sleep.

I read Weissbluth, too, and found it super helpful. Not a thrilling read by any stretch of the imagination, but it did the trick in our household. Good luck!

@heartonastring: I'm totally cool with taking myself (and my boobs) out of the bedtime equation because I feel like I (and the boobs) are the ultimate sleep crutch for him. My husband is actually going to switch shifts for 3 months to see if we can get this sleep business figured out!

@grizz: I won't pretend like we have sleep all figured out! Getting her to sleep both at bedtime and MOTN isn't an issue for us though and I think it really did all come together when we finally achieved drowsy but awake. The key in our case is that DH does bedtime so I'm not part of the equation and neither are the boobs! She gets a bottle if expressed milk, but I know that doesn't work for everyone. But it was the key for us. Once DH got her good at putting herself to sleep I started being able to do bedtime again :)

@heartonastring: We co-bed out of desperation sometimes. He goes down for his first stretch in the crib, and he naps in the crib. He ends up in the bed when I'm too tired to deal with rocking him to sleep anymore. I'm so happy to hear you were able to accomplish drowsy but awake without CIO. I know so many people have success with CIO, but it kills me to hear him cry. I don't think I have it in me to do CIO sleep training! I'm going to go stalk all your sleep threads now lol

Yep, I agree with PPs who said it sounds like a sleep association/object permanence issue. Time to work on putting him down awake...the elusive drowsy but awake. I know, much easier said than done. If it's any consolation, teaching my DD to go down awake only took about a week and we didn't do CIO for that (not to say there weren't any tears, but not CIO).

Do I remember correctly that you co-bed? Are you open to moving him into his own bed (can still be in your room if you want)? Might help eliminate the nursing to sleep association.

@hilsy85: Exactly! It was definitely true for us that once DD figured out how to fall asleep, she stayed asleep. Like your DS, she woke up once at night to nurse and then right back down. She eventually dropped the middle of the night feed too.

@plantains: this! We had to break all sleep associations and let him learn to fall asleep on his own in his crib. It took about 3 nights, and since then he has fallen asleep perfectly (of course, he still woke up at least once a night until now, but he put himself back to sleep after nursing and lengthened his sleep stretches!).

Our biggest help is using the boppy pillow for her to fall asleep in and we turn on a box fan for 'white noise' it works wonders.
She doesn't like being held to go to sleep and doesn't go to sleep in her swing or chair or anything. She likes to put herself to sleep in the boppy and then sleeps fine in her crib.

Does he sleep in your room? It's around the 4-5 month mark that they are more aware of their surroundings. I would try having him sleep in the nursery (not in your room), and add white noise and blackout blinds. Seriously, the white noise and blackout blinds did wonders for us.

Does he fall asleep on his own? I had this issue with DD at this age (I was nursing to sleep) and the only thing that worked for us was to break that habit and put her down awake. We did CIO, worked like a dream.

Oh my gosh! That sucks!! From one " my baby's sleep sucks" mom to another :)

And yes - troublesometots.com has been REALLY helpful, and I've watched basically every single Isis sleep webinar (both free). Agree with others, your LO sounds like he's waking up between every sleep cycle and surprised to find his sleep association gone (nursing/rocking/etc). May be time to help him learn to sleep on his own (drowsy but awake, yadda yadda). Again troublesometots has really awesome posts about how to do that, why it's important, etc. Hugs!

@grizz: If he's waking every 45, it sounds like he is relying on however you're getting him to fall asleep, to fall back asleep. I've read good things about Isis on trading down sleep associations, and as you know, we liked the no cry sleep solution which helped my LO fall asleep on his own. It was reassuring to have a plan - I decided what I was going to do, when, and that I'd stick to it for at least 4 days to see changes (it's so easy to feel like going back to'old ways' in the middle of the night!)

@heartonastring: Daytime sleep depends on the caregiver. He goes down like a dream for our sitter, sleeping 1.5-3 hours in the a.m., and 1.5-2 in the pm. For my husband, he does two 1.5 hour naps. For me, he fights like the devil and will usually give me an hour in his crib or PNP. He'll sleep for 2+ hours each nap if I hold him. He goes to bed around 7:30-8 pm.

DS is officially the worst sleeper of all times. He used to give me a 3 hour 'long' stretch before getting up every hour...now its been replaced by a 27-45 minute stretch. He then wakes every 45 minutes to an hour the rest of the night - whether he's in my room or in his room. Did I mention I'm solo at night 27 days out of the month?

What are your favorite sleep resources/websites, sleep books, sleep cues, sleep tricks, sleep ANYTHING?
