@Anagram: @Mama Bird: @Pumpkin Pie:

Thanks guys! Our pediatrician said not to worry about it - that its fairly common at his age (around 5 months). She even told me not to dreamfeed or try to trick him into eating while sleepy or in the middle of the night (unless he really woke up hungry) so as to not get him in the habit of eating at night again now that he's past the point of needing them. (He was STTN before).

I told myself not to worry about it because his regular intake is about 30 ounces - which is like 750 calories and almost 4 cups of liquid. Considering an 150-200 pound adult can easily live on 1500-2000 calories and 8 cups of water a day, I figure even half of DS' regular intake would be just fine for a 15 pound infant. Once I did that math in my head, I stopped freaking out so much.

Long story short, after about 2 weeks of fussy eating (including 4-5 days of skipping 2 full feedings and barely taking 3 ounces at a time) and bad naps/night wakings, he ate totally normally yesterday, took great naps, and startled me this morning because he slept from 730pm-730am!!!

Thanks for the support!

@gingerbebe: have you talked to your doctor? When I had feeding problems with my LO (turned out to be MSPI) my doctor said less that 12 oz in a day or less than 14 oz for 2-3 days and I would have to take LO to the hospital for rehydration and possibly a feeding tube.

My first went on a week long on and off nursing strike right at 20 weeks. I was so upset, which made things far worse. He would take the bottle, but not breastfeed. I just kept trying and eventually he got through it, but it was super stressful.

How long has this been going on? He could be gassy or a little backed up. My son was only getting maybe 1/3 formula at that age, and it still gave him constipation.

Did you feel around his gums to see if you can feel anything? Have you noticed whether he is refusing the formula bottle, or breast milk?

My LO does the same thing sometimes, and it is so stressful when they don't eat. I'm sorry. I think someone else on here said that they have decreased intake when they are going through a developmental phase. Hang in there, mama.

Can I get some reassurance that this is normal?

DS is just shy of 5 months. We EP with 1 bottle of formula each day. He started fighting his bottle a week ago and in the last 3 days, he's been flat refusing one or two feedings a day, wont take more than 4 ounces at a time (was eating 6-7 ounces before) and half the time stopping at 2-2.5 ounces. He was eating 30 ounces a day and now is only taking about 12-15 ounces during the day time. I can get him to take a few more ounces with a dreamfeed, but even then its 2-4 ounces. He's started waking at night too, but when I offer him a bottle he takes 4 ounces max.

He still has wet diapers, he seems pretty happy otherwise, but the lack of eating is creating bad naps and he's waking in the MOTN (last night 4 times). He's not crying when he wakes, just hollering and wimpering, so I don't know what the deal is.

He IS drooling a bit more and sticking out his tongue, but I don't see any teeth buds and he doesn't seem to be in pain.

Anyways, any advice or experiences with this? Do babies just not eat sometimes? DS did have a bottle strike of sorts in December when he was 3 months old, but it was mostly that he was fussy at the bottle and would eventually eat. And he didn't have nap or MOTN waking issues. This flat refusal, mouth-clamped closed, and spitting out milk thing is new.
