That "thunk" sound upon impact is definitely heart stopping, but usually once I scoop him up, he's fine. He didn't fall from any tall height so I try to be calm and tell him he has to be careful when he's doing blah blah blah. Hug him and kiss him and let him get back to playing. Watch their pupils for dilation or for any vomiting, but otherwise try not to worry. Falling is a normal part of growing up.</p> <p>ETA: This is going to make me sound crazy...but we have hardwood too, and my little guy would often bump his head from sitting. I got so scared in the beginning about him bumping his head and the awful sound it made, so I actually banged my own head on the floor loud enough to make the same sound. I seriously could barely even feel it. So falls from standing or sitting. My LO has hit his head HARD on hardwood and tile before, I know the feeling of dread that goes along with that! I think I wrote this exact post when Xander was around that age (or maybe a little older)!!</p> <p>With Xander, he bumped his head really close to bedtime, so the whole "watch for excessive sleepiness" thing freaked me out. I ended up just putting him to bed, but then I got up every 2 hours to just check that he didn't vomit and was still breathing. He tipped and hit his head on the floor which is hardwood with an area rug. I heard the thump and my heart stopped. I was two feet away with my back to him. :( of course he cried and has been needy in the 10 minutes since.
