@Pirouette: I know! I tried to spot her for a while, but it was pretty futile. It was a happy happy day when she developed the ability to make a controlled fall.

DS falls on his head all the time and we have hardwood floors too. That "thunk" sound upon impact is definitely heart stopping, but usually once I scoop him up, he's fine. He didn't fall from any tall height so I try to be calm and tell him he has to be careful when he's doing blah blah blah. Hug him and kiss him and let him get back to playing. Red spots always form along with lil lines if he hit the edge of something, but all is well. :)

If it helps (my lo is quite the dare devil and hits his head all.the.time! he started walking at 9 months and hasn't stopped running ever since!) my pediatrician told me that falls from their height or less are very very unlikely to be serious. Watch their pupils for dilation or for any vomiting, but otherwise try not to worry. Falling is a normal part of growing up.

ETA: This is going to make me sound crazy...but we have hardwood too, and my little guy would often bump his head from sitting. I got so scared in the beginning about him bumping his head and the awful sound it made, so I actually banged my own head on the floor loud enough to make the same sound. I seriously could barely even feel it. Obviously it isn't exactly the same, but it did make me feel better to know that it really does sound worse than it is.

@Grace: this!!! My lo is covered in marks :( I feel like such a terrible mommy! She lets go all the time like she's cruising but can't find anything to cruise to...sigh

@ladybee: my ped says any falls from their own height or lower are usually not a problem. So falls from standing or sitting. Obviously that's not a hard and fast rule and always trust your instincts, but the sound of hitting hardwood is worse than the pain!

It's horrible when they bump their head :( LO is a bit more sturdy now (though I know I'll have this all to come again when she's pulling up more) but when she started sitting up she fell over and bumped her head a bit too :(

Oh girl, it's gonna be worse. My LO fell back all the time from standing, when she started pulling up. Luckily, those little kids are tougher than they look. I'm sure your little one is fine.

@Katrocap: thank you for checking in. After I googled and googled I felt better knowing what I should look for. He was super needy the rest of the evening but otherwise was normal. I think it scared both of us more than anything. It was his first real ouch moment.

Oh C had done the exact same thing- that thump is just awful. I heard its a good sign if they start crying right away- it's a warning sign if they don't. But really I think falling back from sitting is unlikely to do any real harm. It's awful though.

I've been told to watch for vomiting, or if he passed out when he hit his head. My LO has hit his head HARD on hardwood and tile before, I know the feeling of dread that goes along with that! As long as he's acting normal, I'm sure he's fine, though you can always call your ped's after hours line if you're still feeling nervous!

I'm sorry mama! S has hit her head, no joke, probably 15+ times since she started crawling. The pediatrician did not seem concerned when I asked about it & she always recovers quickly. I'm sure he's okay!

I'm sorry!!! I think I wrote this exact post when Xander was around that age (or maybe a little older)!!

With Xander, he bumped his head really close to bedtime, so the whole "watch for excessive sleepiness" thing freaked me out. I ended up just putting him to bed, but then I got up every 2 hours to just check that he didn't vomit and was still breathing. He was totally fine and bumping the head is totally normal at this age, ESPECIALLY close to bedtime when babies are more clumsy! <3

Did he develop a bump at all?

He was sitting and playing on the floor. He tipped and hit his head on the floor which is hardwood with an area rug. I heard the thump and my heart stopped. I was two feet away with my back to him. :( of course he cried and has been needy in the 10 minutes since. He's still playing but he has to be sitting next to me.

What do I need to look out for?
