I had a surgery under general at 18 months (muscular eye surgery), and I didn't have to stay overnight. That was roughly 25 years ago, too, so I imagine it'll be even safer now. :)

@banana: That's exactly what my son has! Only in the one eye though.

I hope he doesn't have to stay overnight.

A friend of ours had a son who had to have tear duct surgery. His eyes were constantly watery and he would rub it constantly. The doc said he had a blocked tear duct that required minor surgery. He didn't have to stay overnight! :)

My son had ear tube placement at 8 months under general anesthesia but it was an outpatient procedure so we were in and out in about 1 hour, no overnight stay. I know they aren't the same kind of surgeries but hopefully that helps. I hope the surgery goes well!

I'm not an MD but am a pharmacist who works in the OR's at my hospital. We have many people, kids and adults, who go under general anesthesia and go home the same day. This is, of course, at the discretion of the doctor. To get a good idea of what your son's surgeon usually does, you could call the nurses at his office and ask if his patients usually stay overnight or get discharged the same day.

Good luck! My son had surgery under general at 16 months and didn't have to stay overnight, but it was a different type of surgery. It was stressful while he was in there and he was very upset afterward, but recovered so quickly. By the time we were on our way home later that day he was his happy self.

I don't talk about this much, but my baby boy (14.5 months old) has to have surgery on his left eye. He has had a blocked tear duct since birth.

Today the specialist's office called me with a cancellation date for his surgery. He's going in next Friday. All of a sudden I am super anxious. Before today it was far away and I had an idea of when we were going in, but now it's so real.

They are putting him under general... Dr bees, will he have to stay overnight in the hospital? It's not day surgery, but at the main OR.
