I think I need to be stricter with getting a good latch- sometimes it's ok but not perfect and I let it go but then it ends up hurting.

Side note- when did you introduce the pacifier? I don't want to screw up her latch but sometimes she will happily suck on a pinky for a little bit. We have one paci that she doesn't really care for and I'm not sure I want her to yet?

Perfectly normal! At that age you should just go with what they want. The hour long nursing sessions won't last forever I promise! Just settle in with a Netflix subscription and enjoy the quiet cuddles. They get faster eventually :)

@glimmersnaps: we had a great side lying session this morning followed by some cobedding snuggles :). But her latch isn't quite good enough to do that any time except at the end of a session.

I remember this well. Totally normal! Keep some snacks where you are, lots of water, and a TV series on netflix. I was on the couch or in the chair nursing almost all day for the first few weeks. I watched A LOT of One Tree Hill :) It was probably an hour each session and she ate every 90 minutes or so...so just like your LO.

Oh my first one was just exactly like this. I'd say the best thing you can do is to get really comfortable while nursing. Have different places (couch, bed, whatever) that you sit wile nursing and keep things to do like a book, iPad, laptop handy.

You might also think about using a wrap or sling. If you can get him comfortable in there and able to nurse, you have two hands free to do whatever you want! (They even make water slings so you could use it in the shower.)

Also learn side-lying breastfeeding if you haven't already so you can sleep while he's on the boob ;)

I said this to someone else earlier... What really helped me was having a baby scale at home. I'd weigh him before and after to see how much he got. Sometimes he already had gotten 3 ounces after like 25 minutes but still wanted to just suck for a hour. I'd know that he had eaten so I didn't feel bad about taking him off and popping in a pacifier. This was recommended to me by my LC.

@erinpye: yes to just leaving your shirt off! I can't imagine wearing anything but a nursing tank. She just took a three hour nap so I actually had time to shower and relax.

One day I'll wear a real shirt again...

It's completely normal. I remember feeling like I might as well leave my shirt off entirely when S was a newborn. Eventually, your LO will nurse more efficiently and take longer breaks between sessions, but it's not uncommon for it to take 30-60 mins a session, every 90 mins or so when they're that young.

I have no idea but just wanted to send you some virtual hugs and say you're doing a good job, and it's ok if you have to put lo down or hand lo off to dh or someone else. It's ok if lo cries a little. It's ok to take care of yourself too and it can really make a difference in your mood in the early days. :)

Definitely normal! The first few weeks are just one long series of growth spurts (or at least feel like it!) and are setting you up to have great supply! Suckling at the breast is also your LO's favourite place to be right now :-)

Hang in there mum, you're doing a wonderful job!

Normal. My newborn ate at least every 90 minutes. And nursing took at least 30-45min per session, so yeah. I was constantly nursing him. Get yourself some good books to read!

Ugh, I remember thinking there's no way this baby could still be hungry...they are eating machines! When LO was tiny, I would stroke her jawline (stimulates reflex to suck) and also do breast compressions (helps milk come out) when she started to doze off, which helped get her attention to eat a little longer and hopefully stay fuller. I also would blow on her hair sometimes or tickle her feet to wake her up a little...anything you can do to make them eat at one time instead of dozing, snacking, dozing, snacking. But they still eat quite often!

@Foodnerd81: It gets better :) I don't really think there is anything you can do but wait it out. Now at 8 months he nurses 4 times a day for 10 minutes or less - I would've never imagined that to be true. I never woke him up to eat and usually just let him nurse until he popped himself off in terms of timing.

She is 13 days old and is always on the boob. This morning it's been like, an hour on, half an hour off. She eats slowly and falls asleep a lot so I'm always waking her to eat more bc otherwise she gets pissed five minutes later.

Any advice to make her a more efficient eater? And how long per side do you do at this age? I need a little break here! I am using the Soothie nipple pads but I haven't even had a chance to put them back on this morning bc she is just on the boob the whole time!

I'm grateful that breast feeding is working for us and I know enough not to take that for granted. And I know I'm still building my supply. But at the same time, I also need to eat. And shower. And pee.
