Sorry to be the bearer of bad news but it was well into 7 months for us. And even now at 8 months she surprises me with a short nap when she's supposed to be taking longer naps. Naps were always short for her and even got shorter (20 minutes! Eek!) before they got longer (1 45 minute nap 1 1.5 hour nap) Can you baby wear and get things done? I would do just about everything that way.

@MsLipGloss: OMG :(

@PrincessBaby: We always say this, when LO wakes up all bright eyed and bushy tailed after 20 minutes and is smiling and giggling at us, we're like dammit... how could we possibly be upset!

@coacheswife123: I think "dusting" refers to when we let our dog run around after having dug and rolled around in dirt in the back yard and then have no time whatsoever to clean it up for months? Amirite?

Oh, and the idea of her staring at the camera until you get her is just adorable, btw. I know it's probably anything but when you're dealing with it all day, but it's just kinda funny that she stares you down lol.

Man, some kids are just crappy nappers. That's our LO (you probably remember me complaining about this profusely). I finally just made peace with the fact that he is not a great napper. He's a great night sleeper, and that's the best I can hope for. It's particularly bad now that he's at daycare. At least when he was home, even when he did have 30-minute naps, we could put him down frequently enough that he would string together some daytime sleep. It may not have been the most restorative sleep ever, but it was something.

Now, at daycare, he's so into everything going on there that I'm lucky if he's logged an hour total on his sheet at the end of the day. They try their best, bless their hearts, but they'll put him down and he'll wake up 10 minutes later, etc.

I know it sucks to not be able to get anything done -- on the weekends, I have pretty much resigned myself to napping when he naps or just chilling on the bed next to him playing on my phone rather than attempting to get anything done -- but I think that as long as they're happy and don't seem to be suffering any ill effects from not napping (overtired, etc.), then you just have to let go. I was OBSESSED with how to get LO to nap longer, fall asleep more quickly, etc. I would have anxiety attacks while he napped, constantly on edge wondering when he'd wake up. Now, I just assume he won't nap long, or will wake up multiple times, and then if he does trot out an hour nap, I'm pleasantly surprised.

I know that doesn't help much, but just wanted you to know you're not alone!

@photojane: Sleep issues on *every* level are draining and frustrating! Complain away! Getting it all out makes it easier to do it all over again the next day . . . ! ((hugs))

@MerryC: Yes! Eventually, there will be sleep for us, too! And yeah, I would never admit this anywhere but on HB, but I have shed more than a few tears over the sleep issue. ((hugs))

Well, I guess at least I'm not alone! I do see how her night sleep might be affecting the length of the daytime naps. I never thought about it that way. I'm digging her current nighttime/morning nap routine though, and I don't want to mess with it! Dusting will have to wait. :)

@MsLipGloss: I'm so sorry! I'll never complain again! :| You are wonder woman.

@sarbear: Thank you!!

@shopaholic: I used to always swaddle for naps, but it doesn't seem to affect the length. She's actually starting to bust out of the swaddle. Strong little thing!

@PrincessBaby: That is so true! She's freakin' adorable. I can't ever be mad at her. I hope she's not a bad girl. I will never be able to yell at her.

at almost 6.5 months, 85% of my LO's naps are 30-45 mins long. an hour is a great nap for her. she sleeps 11 hours at night and is generally a pretty happy baby, so i don't stress out over her bad napping habits anymore.

She is so cute! I agree that she is probably sleeping too much at night so you can try to limit that to see if it helps the nap situation. Worth a shot! I know that I need my alone time during the day when the baby is napping to get stuff done.

We're still fighting this at 5.5 months, although things have recently improved. We are actually just reaching the point you are at now, where they take one long nap in the morning. The rest are about 45 minutes. This has been a HUGE improvement, because for the longest time, (moooonths) we were doing 4-5, 30-minute naps. Like you, we have awesome night sleep, so it's really hard to complain!
Hang in there. I've heard that morning nap is the first to fall into place, then afternoon naps get there.
And yah. Babycenter is full of crap.

That is an awesome night stretch, so I agree she probably just doesn't need that much sleep during the day! I second @shopaholic:s advice to try a walk or a drive with her. My LO usually takes her longest nap of the day (other than the morning nap) during and after a walk or ride.

I think @hilsy85: is right. Since she is sleeping so much at night, she probably doesn't need that much daytime naps.

K has been a notorious cat-napper with 5-10 min. But in the past few weeks we've been building up to half an hour or more. Best way I can get her to take longer naps are seriously to take her out for walks or go window-shopping. And he past week I've started trying to swaddle for an afternoon nap and have gotten a few hour-plus sessions! Do you swaddle for naps?

oh my goodness, her little face and cheeks are adorable. it's funny how all the sleep guides and books make it sound like babies magically take 2-3 hour naps, and don't mention the 20-45 minute naps that afflict so many of us. at least your LO wakes up happy--my LO would take a catnap and be pissed when he woke up. i started leaving him in the crib for 15-20 minutes to see if he would go back to sleep. he usually did, but it was a difficult (and ongoing) learning process.

@Smurfette: Gah - I remember those days. It can be so frustrating! On the weekends, unless we are out (she will sleep in her carrier), I *still* hold my LO for naps. Because if I am in the house, she won't sleep alone. She will sleep in the swing for DH, and in her crib for Nana, but nada for me.

R is 9 weeks but naps awful too unless we hold her. We have to hold her to get her to sleep, wait 20 mins put her down she is up within 10 mins. If I hold her she will sleep two hours. So frustrating. It is 230 and I still haven't showered today :(

Followup, I think @hilsy85 hit the nail on the head, she is sleeping a long time at night. I didnt catch that at first. So to get her 15-16 hours a day of sleep, she probably just doesnt need to nap as much. Could you try to take advantage of her awesome night sleep to get your things done instead? Like during her 8-10:30 stretch or after she goes down for the night? Or alternatively, I've just figured out how to do everything while mine are awake ;) Good luck! Unpredictable and short naps are really frustrating.

Around 5.5/6 months, he started getting into 3 consistent naps. HOnestly though, it sounds like your LO gets a LOT Of overnight sleep (13.5 hours), so she just might not need that much sleep during the day! You could try waking her up at 830 to see if that helps with naps, but I know how crazy it is to think of waking a sleeping baby :)

@googly-eyes: To be honest, I really don't know. Some days are easier than others (today has been brutal) . . . but I really have to watch myself because I forget so much more than I used to ! I have to make lists and read things twice at work to make sure that I haven't forgotten something or overlooked something (I forgot my work laptop today *sigh*). I also have to make a conscious effort to try to think through things logically instead of reacting emotionally, although I am not always successful.

We just started moving past the 45 minute mark at about 5.5 months but it is still hit or miss. And we didn't have great night sleep along with it, so no sympathy from me, haha :) I just tried to roll with it and not stress too much - eventually longer awake times helped. Hope she lengthens them soon!
