@avivoca: Yeah, it depends on where you place the monitor. My boys' monitor is up high so the temperature is always reading warmer than what it feels like on their beds. Also, from what I understand, if she is strong enough to turn over from back to belly, then she should be okay to be sleeping on her belly. Of course, it never hurts to worry and do checks to make sure your LO is still breathing. My husband STILL freaks out when our 25-month-old sleeps on his belly. Sometimes the nervousness never goes away. :)

@erwoo: She's seven months old, and her room is usually between 72 and 75, though I don't believe the monitor since it feels much cooler.

@septca: It was so nice to have her go to sleep without a fight! Thanks for the words of wisdom.

Oh yes I was a nervous wreck too when she started doing this around 5m. The first time I saw her like this I had walked into her room and she was face down in the mattress. I panicked and flipped her over right away. It took about a week of worrying and the I just let it go. She only sleeps on her stomach now and there's nothing I could do to stop her!

My DD started flipping onto her stomach at about 5 months and - OMG - she slept *so* much better. Of course, I was a nervous wreck about it and flipped her before going to bed for a couple of weeks. But my ped said something really interesting - basically she said that the SIDS research shows that the risk is higher for babies that are *put down* on their stomachs, not babies that flip themselves and sleep on their bellies. She said that she had never read about a case of SIDS where the baby was put down on their backs, so as long as I always put DD down on her back, I should not worry about it. My understanding is that once a baby is strong enough to flip themselves, they have the capacity to sleep that way without harm.

It's funny thinking back on this stage... DD is now almost 16 mo and is exclusively a stomach sleeper. I can so clearly remember being stressed about it when she first started sleeping on her stomach, but now it's just the way things are.

How old is she? At least you have a sensitive monitor. ;) Just make sure her room is between 68-72 degrees and nothing else in her crib.

@Emsmems: She's a little congested, which is why I can hear her. Poor girl got her mom's allergies.

She ended up waking up to eat at 11:30 and slept the rest of the night on her back or side. But she only woke up every two hours after that! I feel like a new person!

Stomach sleeping is what keeps LO STTN. He started doing it around 8 months once we weaned him from the magic sleepsuit. He rolls all over his crib all night long, but always ends up on his side or tummy!

Something I found interesting is my Pediatrician said one of the ideas behind back to sleep is that babies don't sleep as soundly on their backs so they will wake themselves more easily to breathe (if they were to stop breathing). So there is something to them sleeping better on their stomach! I would be nervous too but don't think I would turn her! And that's a sensitive monitor if you can hear her breathe on it! Wow! (Although we have white noise so we couldn't hear his breathing over that anyway, I'm sure)

My LO was a horrific sleeper. When she flipped to her stomach at 7.5 months was when she finally started STTN. She could roll over at that point so I wasn't *too* worried. But still worried at the beginning as well. :)

Babies sleeping with their butts in the air is the cutest.

DS started sleeping on his stomach about a month ago. I wouldn't say he sleeps better, but he looks so cozy. Now most of the time I just put him down on his tummy since he flips there anyway.

@avivoca: I flipped m2 once and we were up the rest of the night! She sleeps so much better on her tummy. I start her on her back and if she is really tired, she stays that way. Otherwise, she rolls all night long, all over her crib.

@avivoca: Gotta do what makes you comfortable... but I will say, my pediatrician said once LO was strong enough to flip over on his stomach (and MUCH preferred sleeping that way) it was okay to leave him like that. No flipping necessary, no worries!

Babies do seem to sleep a lot better/more soundly on their tummies.

It took a week or so of me obsessively watching him over the monitor when he first starting sleeping on his tummy before I got even remotely comfortable with it, but he did sleep a LOT better that way (usually with his butt way up in the air :silly: ) Now he cycles through all kinds of positions!

...and she's been asleep for two and a half hours!!!!! She flipped that way and went straight to sleep. I'm still kind of paranoid about it, but after three weeks of hourly wake-ups, I'll take what I can get. Her daycare teacher said she's been napping that way for awhile.

I may flip her before I go to bed.
