@arden I used to go to grocery store to have mine check by the pharmacy counter with one of the self-check Bp cuffs.

@Arden: Glad you called! I can almost guarantee if you laid down on your left side and re-checked your bp in a few minutes it would be down..... I kind of forgot that vital instruction my MW gave me. Oops. As for getting your bp checked tomorrow, I would go to the fire dept... then again I always loved when the firefighters would come into the ER so I might be a bit partial. lol. I'm sure whatever is most convenient for you would work. I would see about getting it manually checked though so you can be sure to get the most accurate read, sometimes the little machine ones get wonky.

Blood pressure spikes are no joke!

But my blood pressure was much, much higher than that my entire pregnancy (and it is usually very healthy) and I still made it to 40 weeks with a healthy baby. Just in case you're freaking out...

Ok, I talked to my midwife and she said she's not happy with that blood pressure (and she was surprised, since it's never been high in the past).
She told me drink lots of water, lay down on my left side, and relax. She said if I get blurred vision, headache or any pain to go to the hospital.
In the morning she wants me to go to the local fire department to get it checked and call her to let her know what it is. She said I can come into the office tomorrow morning if I want, but since it's 50 minutes away she thought I might rather get it checked at the fire department.

How does that work, anyway? You just show up at the fire department and go "Uh, hi, can you take my blood pressure?" Would it be better to go to the Health Department? It's closer.

@Arden: I normally run pretty low (115/70) & mine spiked to what would be considered kind of high for anyone, so pretty high for me. I can't remember exactly what it did pre-labor but in labor it jumped to 152/92 (I have my flowchart).

Before labor I had some spray calmag that I was told to take 4 sprays 4 times a day (the normal dose is 8 sprays per day), and then in labor I did the sprays AND took a soak with magnesium flakes.

I would definitely ask your MW how much she advises for that bp range. If nothing else it'll help ease your mind. =)

@runsyellowlites: How high was yours?
I used quite a bit of magnesium spray on my legs and took 400 mg of mag in capsule form, but I don't really know how much I should be taking. I don't want to overdo it either...

I would call just to be safe, or shoot her a text? I would text my MW when it was late so that if it was of concern she could call but if not she could just quickly text me back.

When my bp spiked I was given the magnesium, told to drink LOTS of water, eat MORE protein, and rest.... pretty much bedrest for a few days taking the magnesium 3/4 times a day & monitoring my bp.

I would call ASAP, especially since it spiked again. Blood pressure can be a very big deal. You need to make sure you're okay.

My blood pressure is normally 120/70.

I started feeling off (lightheaded, heart fluttering) so I took my blood pressure (which hurt, really bad. My hand tingled and the veins popped out a lot) and it was the highest it's ever been for me - 139/79.
I put magnesium spray all over my legs right away and also took my magnesium tablets (that I take for leg cramps) with a bunch of water, and took it again five minutes later and it was down to 135/73.
Just now I tested again and it's 141/89.

Is this cause for concern? Should I be calling my midwife (it's almost midnight, I don't want to call unless I need to)?

I'm 29 weeks pregnant, btw.
