@ladybee: DH's studio will be down there, but he just got his desk down there yesterday, so hopefully (since she is a daddy's girl), she will realize it's not so bad.

@katiew92081: Good idea, I will put some of her toys down there! I was trying to make her come down for treats, and that worked twice but then she bolted back upstairs.

@MrsH: No, her food is in the kitchen, I could put it down there but I'm afraid I would forget to feed her sometimes lol. I could give it a try though.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone! I will try them out today :)

Do you feed the cat in the basement too?

Our cat goes down because he wants to eat and then uses the litter.

When we moved into our place our vet told us to lock our kitty in the basement with her litter box. It gave her an opportunity to get used to the sounds. She was scared as heck (every time I went downstairs she was hiding in the laundry tub) but it made a HUGE difference. She was able to explore down there and get used to things.

Maybe put some other things of hers down there, like her food, and some toys, so that she learns to let it be *her* space? Play with her down there with string, and give her treats down there.

Do you have a place where you can go down to hang out to show her it's safe? I don't have a scardey cat but our pup is afraid of his tail.

As a fellow scaredy cat parent, my advice would to keep carrying her down there to use the box. It's a new and unfamiliar place and it may take a few weeks until she's comfortable. Autumn (my chicken baby cat) was terrified of ceiling fans for the longest time but now they don't bother her. It was hot last summer and they were the only way the house stayed moderately cool.

...but that is where we want to keep her litter box. We moved into our new house last week and it's 4 times as big as our apartment was. It also comes with all kinds of noises, which makes a scaredy cat, even more scared. We really want to keep her litter box in the basement (which is partially finished, so it's not THAT scary) but we have to carry her down because she won't willingly go on her own. Any advice? I really do not want her litter box in the main living area, but I don't want her to be scared either...
