Thanks again everyone for your well wishes.

An update on Cheeto....his feeding tube fell out last week. We took him back to the vet and because he had started to eat a little bit on his own, we decided to leave the tube out and see how he does. Well, he's pretty much back to normal. That day he ate 3 helpings of wet food and has been eating like a champ ever since. I think he hated having the tube and the neck brace thingy on and feels much better without it. The only un-normal thing left is that he hasn't cleaned himself in weeks so he's pretty gross. DH is gonna give him a bath tonight, which I'm sure he'll hate. It's so nice to have our sweet kitty back! Fingers crossed that this never happens again!

Cheeto seems to be getting better, slowly but surely. The other day he licked some wet food and last night I watched him eat 5-10 pieces of dry food. It's the first food he's eaten in weeks. And he jumped up/down from our bed a couple times last night to cuddle. Hopefully he starts to eat more and more!

No real interest in food yet. The vet thinks he'll need the tube for 2-4 weeks so I think itll take time. He ventured out of the bathroom we've been keeping him in though so I think he has a little more energy. Fingers crossed. Thank you for all the well wishes!

An update on Cheeto - We are on day 2 of tube feeding. When I opened the bathroom door to check on him this morning, he was actually up on his feet. It's the first time I've seen him out of his bed in 3 days. Later he purred a bit while I was petting him. I'm hoping this is a sign that he's feeling a bit better!

@MrsBrewer - Nope, he didn't eat anything overnight. Every time I got up to feed LO, I tried to feed him something but he wouldn't have any of it. DH took him back to the vet this morning to have the feeding tube inserted. Hopefully it will make him feel better to have some food in his tummy and his appetite will come back.

Your vet probably mentioned this, but there's also the option of care credit (http://www.carecredit.com/vetmed/). I've never used it, but I think it works like a credit card, and seem to recall that if you pay off the balance in 6 months you won't get charged interest (but I could be making that up). We were struggling with the thought that we were paying so much money for the diagnosis that we wouldn't be able to afford the cure! Luckily 'the cure' was a $50 bag of cat food in our case, but I don't know what we would have done if it was a $5000 surgery (that was the estimate if he needed surgery on either his gall stones or kidney stones, I can't remember which).

I'm so sorry! Our pets are our children, too even when we have lo's. I hope Cheeto starts eating soon. I feel the pain of pet medical bills and understand having to decide what to or not to spend on them. We've spent $1200 on our dogs this year... and will probably spend more.

Hope things get easier with your fussy lo, too!

@BeachMama: we would put a big glob of nutrical in their mouths. It's sticky so they can't spit it out, so at least they are getting some calories.

How I actually cured my cat was I finally fed her some dried squid ( it's like Korean beef jerky) and one of her favorite foods. Once she started eating again, her appetite started coming back. But she barely ate anything for 2-3 weeks.

Good luck! I will be back if I think of anything else!

We struggled too; you hate for money to be a reason. I actually ended up getting pet insurance for the dogs as a result of our experience (the cats all have various preexisting conditions). I never want to be in that position again, it's a horrible feeling! What Mrs. Bee suggested sounds promising, but I'd imagine the vet is probably pushing to have the tube done sooner rather than later?

Thanks for the kind thoughts and suggestions. I got him to lick a spoon with sour cream, but that's it so far. It gives me a little hope though. Right now DH and I are leaning towards getting him the tube. We feel like we've already spent so much just diagnosing him, we have to at least give it a try to get him better again

@Mrs. Bee - I found some Nutrical at the pet store and picked up some baby food So far he's not interested but we'll keep trying

@Lemondrop - yep he's an orange tabby. By far the coolest cat I've head had. Super laid back, super loving and cuddly. People that usually don't like cats have commented that they love Cheeto.

There is a nutritional paste called nutrical. They have it for dogs and cats. It's rich in calories and they often love the flavor. Sometimes it jump starts their appetite. They just need to start eating again. I've used it for my anorexic dog and cat with success. You should be able to find it at most pet stores. Give that a try...

@strawberrybee - Your case sounds similar to mine. Took him to the vet where they did bloodwork that showed slightly elevated levels, gave him some fluids and anti-nausea meds and we went home. Didnt get better overnight so we went back for an xray that showed fluid in the belly. They sent us to the emergency vet so he could get an IV and a belly ultrasound that showed an inflamed pancreas. He spent 2 nights there where they said he ate a little bit but not much.

A feeding tube is another $500. I'm just so torn. On one hand I logically know we shouldn't blow our savings on him -especially now that we have a family, and we are paying my hospital bills and moving. On the other hand I feel like this isnt a terminal illness and we're just giving up if we don't get it for him. Where do you draw the line?

We tried his regular dry food, wet food, and some tuna. He shows interest in it but won't actually eat. DH used a syringe to "force feed" him but I know it's not enough. He needs to eat a meal.

my cat went through a bout of anorexia and our vet thought we would have to insert a feeding tube as well. i bought every type of cat food out there, but what finally ended up working was turkey or chicken flavored baby food from beechnut. apparently cats go crazy for it. canned tuna is also a favorite.

i've been through so much with my two cats so i totally empathize. try offering a lot of different foods, and petting her while she eats can also be a huge help. good luck!!!!!!!!!
