@nana87: Hope not to threadjack but maybe these nipple formers would help: http://www.medelabreastfeedingus.com/products/592/softshells (the ones with the smaller hole in them). They helped me a lot and once he got used to latching without a shield onto my preformed nipple we were able to ditch those too!

@Danizaur: Keeping my FX weaning off the shield is successful for you. It worked out for us but it took a lot of patience on my part. I've found that introducing new things worked best when he was really sleepy like at the MOTN feeds (not sure whether or not you still have those though).

We nursed for 12 months with a shield. Didn't affect either of us negatively, and when we tried weaning, she went off breastfeeding altogether, so we stuck with it. Messy, but ya know... it was what worked for us. xx

Lo is 5 months and I am so bad at weaning off the shield! Sometimes she will nurse without it but other times she wails and arches her back if I try to get her to latch w/o it. I really need to wean off of it bc my supply is low and I think it is part of the problem, but it's so hard :( my nips are flat too unless I'm really engorged or she's already been nursing for awhile

No advice but look on the bright side... maybe it'll be a good thing when he starts teething? I'd love to have something between lo's teeth and my nips!

It's like you're talking about my LO... I tried to wean off of it but I gave up. He's much happier now... Sometimes he loves to hold it when he's done nursing and he licks it and rubs it in his face and he sometimes puts his thumb in and puts it in his mouth... Right now he's asleep and is holding it in his fist...

@Arden: It's hit or miss. Sometimes he'll nurse okay without it and other times he gets fussy when it's not there. When we try without it, it usually doesn't last long before he gets frustrated and pulls off. My nipples are still really flat and I feel like he can't get a good feel of how to latch without it still.

Hmmm. Is it possible that he just doesn't realize he can nurse without it? Have you tried nursing him when he's asleep or drowsy to sort of trick him into it?

We've been using a nipple shield since day 1. T is 6 months old and we've had varying success with weaning off of it, but for the most part, we still use it.

His new favorite thing to do now is nurse, with his little hand resting right beside his mouth. As soon as he pulls off for a break he rips it off, sticks it in his mouth and rubs it on his face like he loves it.

Just now I offered him the breast again, without the nipple shield because it was in his hand. He just looked at me, dropped the nipple shield, waited til I applied it, and then lunged to latch himself on.

It's not possible he's emotionally attached to the shield, right? I would like to get rid of this thing.
