@Amurray: Nolita is a great place to stay. Definitely spend some time wandering around the neighborhoods there - Soho, East Village, Chinatown - fantastic shopping, restaurants and cafes.

Go to Cafe Gitane on Mott and Prince for lunch with pretty people (http://www.cafegitanenyc.com/), stop at Parm on Mulberry and Prince for Italian-American comfort food (chicken parm sandwich and fried calamari, yum), go to Mile End Deli on Bond St for sandwiches (http://mileenddeli.com/), have dinner at The Smile, also on Bond St. (http://thesmilenyc.com/)...

We used to live in the area (and eat a lot, apparently). Have a wonderful trip!

First time to NY...there are infinite possibilities! I live here and just did a staycation so all this is fresh in my mind. I'd suggest focusing on a different neighborhood each day so you can get the most out of it. My favorite thing is to just wander around and see what you stumble upon - little pocket parks, cool museums, people-watching etc. Some suggestions:
- Chelsea: High Line park (best on a weekday), Chelsea Market, galleries, fashion stuff (I'm not so fashionable but this area will be bumping during Fashion Week)
- East Village: My absolute favorite restaurant Pylos, Big Gay Ice Cream, Tompkins Square Park, walk around Lower East Side, Tenement Museum, sticky toffee pudding at Schiller's (best dessert in the city), lobster roll at Luke's Lobster, Union Square
- West Village: Washington Square Park, cute restaurants like The Little Owl, you could do this show Accomplice: Village which is SO FUN - kind of cheesy but great if you can convince your friends to go too
- Upper East Side: The Met, Central Park, the Frick
- Upper West Side: Lincoln Center, Museum of Natural History, Tavern on the Green, Central Park
- Financial District: Battery Park (good view of Statue of Liberty, Wall Street/NY Stock Exchange, Trinity Church, 9/11 Memorial, South Street Seaport

If you can, see about getting tickets to a filming of The Daily Show, Colbert Report or one of the late-night shows. It can be hard to get tix but sometimes you get lucky.

As for shows, I second the suggestions for Once and Book of Mormon. I also loved Wicked and Kinky Boots and Avenue Q (Off Broadway now but so so so good). You can get good deals at BroadwayBox.com or go to the TKTS booth in Times Square or South Street Seaport the day of. Another amazing show is Sleep No More - it's interactive, you wander around, it's hard to describe but really cool and only in NY.

Yikes that was a novel. Have fun! I <3 NY!

@Amurray: oh, I forgot--one quick fun thing to do is take the Roosevelt Island aerial tram. It's just the cost of a subway ride using a metro card, the views are great, and it's fun! http://www.yelp.com/biz/roosevelt-island-tramway-new-york

And battery park is really nice, and you can combine exploring it with eating brunch or lunch at this place, which is pretty cool if you are into history http://www.yelp.com/biz/fraunces-tavern-new-york-3?osq=oldest+restaurant

We went for the Super Bowl this past February and my favorite part of the trip was The Book of Mormon. I loved it!

Also loved Shake Shack for a quick lunch...yum!

We also went to Craft and Ko for dinner which were amazing. Our friend owns a restaurant in Brooklyn called Hunter which has great drinks and delicious food. We didn't get there for brunch but it's apparently amazing as well

Loved waking around Central Park (grabbed coffee and a light breakfast at a place in the park - awesome quiche!). Loved MOMA. Basically loved that you could walk or take the subway anywhere and do so much stuff.

We went last summer. It was my first time, but DH had been before. Some highlights of our trip: Yankees game, Shake Shack, Kati Roll Company, M&M store and Cake Boss cafe (Times Square), walking across Brooklyn Bridge & getting ice cream at The Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory. I got lots of great suggestions from HB ladies. Will try to find the thread.

If you can get over to brooklyn or queens first thing in the morning when the sun is coming up, do it! It's really gorgeous. The view below is just from my phone, taken at our local park in Long Island City on a morning walk with the dog. BTW, the Long Island City waterfront is a quick, flat 4 minute walk from the train (or 0 min walk from the ferry) while the Brooklyn waterfront is a longer, hilly trek from the stations.

I will think about other suggestions and get back to you.

New York is one of my favorite cities. I am so excited that you will be visiting it! Places that I love to go to are the Strand Bookstore, the Cloisters, the Whitney Museum, the Tenement Museum in the Lower East Side and Pearl River Mart (a great store in SoHo).

BTW, I bought an airline ticket to visit a friend in Peru the night before I got pregnant. It was an amazingly low fare, so I didn't want to cancel. I went to Peru for two weeks when I was 13 weeks pregnant. I basically followed your plan (6-8 hours of daytime activity, rest, then out to dinner) and was fine. Have fun!

@lawbee11: Rent's been closed for a few years but it was one of my favorites too!

I've seen Newsies and loved it. It's closing in a few months so you might be able to score a deal on tickets. I'd love to see the new Les Mis.

South Street Seaport is fun to walk around and do some shopping.

@Amurray: broadway shows--I would go to Once or Book of Mormon (if you can get tickets) or Newsies...I don't know, there are a lot of really good ones. Once is great, though.

The only "insider tip" I have is this place on a Tuesday from 5-8 pm. http://www.yelp.com/biz/third-floor-cafe-new-york

They have an amazing happy hour that is all you can drink/all you an eat Korean fried appetizers (think big plates of fried chicken, fried fish, other fried goodness) for $20/pp. Not sure how fun that would be while pregnant though!

Sounds fun!

I really enjoyed the Met museum. I also loved seeing the public library on 5th avenue and walking around 5th avenue near St Patricks Cathedral and Rock center. Walking across the Brooklyn Bridge was also fun.

Right off the top of my head: highline, smorgasburg or lic flea, 9/11 memorial, museums, cloisters, botanical garden (brooklyn or bronx) and check out time out nyc and gothamist to see whats going on that week. Also, shopping of course.

I'm no help with broadway shows as i never go.

M and I booked a 8 night trip to NYC a few days before we found out we are expecting (call it a planned surprise, we were totally surprised it happened so soon). I briefly looked into canceling the trip because I did not know how I would be feeling and I did not want to miss out on food scene. We opted to go for it still. I will be about 13 weeks along. We are staying in NOLITA and will be there at the same time as our good friends during fashion week, she is doing hair and makeup for the shows and I'm hoping to get into one or two. We will be spending 2 full days with them, and they are NYC pros.

As for the rest of the time, I'm trying to wade through what we really should do, and what some alternatives to the typical tourist stuff (a great view of the Statue of Liberty vs going on a tour inside it). What Broadway show is a must?

I'm hoping to do a daytime activity 6-8 hours, then rest for a bit and head back out for dinner.

I am a photographer and will be showing my work from this trip so anything photography related would be awesome (I'm heading to Brooklyn one day to get the city skyline).

So what are the must see and do things for my trip?
