i total the calories of each ingredient as i cook and divide that by how many servings i decide it makes. (very tedious but it makes feel better that it's accurate) i then do a "quick add" on my fitness pal.

I enter ingredients as recipe if its something I cook frequently, otherwise I guesstimate by picking an entry

Most of the eating out I can find the exact restaurant, but otherwise i look for consistency among calorie counts of choices and try to pick the most common

I usually guessimate. I always have a good idea of what is going into my dinner meals, so I read the cal counts for the ingredients, add them up, and do a 'add calories only' thing for the meal. For going out to eat, I do what @MerryC does and go by the middle entry, or what has the most confirmations. :)

For stuff you eat pretty frequently, myfitnesspal has a meal creator where you can save meals, saves time if you eat the same thing a lot!

I enter home cooked meals as a recipe as well... and usually everything I've ever eaten at a restaurant is in the database. Or I'll get the info from the company's website or app.

I enter mine in ingredient by ingredient, which seems to take forever -- but the recipe function in most of those programs really helps like @MerryC said!

Home cooked meals I usually enter in my ingredients as a recipe, that way I know more precisely, and can enter the meal again easily ( I'm a creature of habit). For eating out, I usually just pick a middle of the road estimate basedon what is already in the database. On my fitness pal, I usually go by what has the most confirmations.

Those that use my fitness pal or other calorie counters.

How do you estimate calories for eating out or home cooked meals?

For example I made enchilladas. It was a fairly easy recipe with five ingredients so I think I got a good estimate. However other things seem to have a huge variance in the database.
