@Finfan: I like this idea!

We're in the same boat. He's 4 and most nights sleeps in our bed at some point. I don't mind. But it would be great if he found his own room.

I'll definitely try some of these suggestions. I don't want to upset him and just make bedtime/wake-ups a nightmare but I do want to encourage him to use his room & bed.

You could try a monkey lock on the door from
Amazon.

But what worked for us was leaving the door wide open, and saying "you can play in your room but as soon as you leave its lights out." (her room has an attached bathroom.) When she leaves or it gets to our designated lights out time, the lights go out. She can fall asleep or not--her choice. She's usually out within 15 minutes. She can be very defiant so we stopped battling her and now she has more ownership of her bedtime routine.

@FancyGem: Then an ok to wake clock and a sticker chart! The ok to wake clock started making sense to DS at about 2.5, so you should be good there. And the sticker chart to reward compliance.

Would peer pressure work? Ha! Our daughter started sleeping in her bed for the full night just a couple of weeks ago. She's 4 too. What worked for us was a chat from her pediatrician and talking to her about her friends who sleep in their beds all by themselves.

Hi,
A little back story. We moved closer to "home" about 2 years ago. Doing so has taken us out of our routine. Our son was just under 2 years old when we moved. We stayed with family until we started to build our home. Our bed/crib was in storage until the house was built. The entire process took almost a year (moving, searching, and moving into the house).
We have struggled to get him to sleep in his bed for over a year now. We have tried letting him sleep in a sleeping bag in our room. My husband has tried staying in the room with him after he was sleep. He doesn't have a problem falling asleep. The issue is staying in his room. Bringing him back doesn't work either. He is very strong willed and "spirited". He didn't say that he is afraid of anything. I'm out of ideas. We would like to ttc soon, but it is kinda hard when we are sleep deprived and he walks in on us. lol
