@wrkbrk: hello darling boy! Have you seen both my kids? They're from the land of giants! I always get asked if Big E is 7 or 8 (she just turned 5!) and Little E is about the same size as your boy I think (size 2 atm). There is sometimes this expectation that they should "know better" or act more mature, but they're still little!

People get weird about size. My friend's daughter is 2 months younger than mine, but a lot smaller so she keeps on telling everyone that they are 6 months apart. So crazy!

I have a friend who's daughter is about a week older then my son. They're about the same size, the girl is maybe slightly heavier then my son. (They're both tall height and average to above average weight) Ever since they were born she's constantly saying how her girl is in bigger clothing sizes. But all her pants are like 2-3 inches too long. It's hilarious!!!

@oliviaoblivia: omg THIS TOO. Some
of friends from mommy & me have been posting that their LOs are "crawling" and "on the move" and "cruising on furniture" and "can't leave them alone for a nanosecond" since they were 5.5 months old. No way. I'm seeing them tomorrow and can't wait to judge how much actual cruising and crawling is happening... my prediction is none.

This post cracked me up. People are nutty.

@SweetiePie: ME TOO! People constantly say DS is huge... and he's always 50-60 %ile for height and weight. But when I respond, "no, he's actually just average." the person always seems so deflated. So now I just agree when people say he's big even though he's not. Although he does have a massive head.

People would always comment how big my kid was from birth. Even though she was comparatively small. And yet she had a 99th percentile head (yeah, ouch). It was really bewildering to get all of those comments. She also has a ton of hair. I think people in general are really bad at judging age vs size (and also milestones). Both parents and non-parents. For parents their sample size includes their number of kids. For non-parents it includes kids you don't see everyday (like relatives) and in both groups your basis of comparison can be so skewed. And also I'd say as a society it's a general first reaction to comment on a kids looks before anything else.

My 3 and 5 year olds are both 30th percentile for height, as people constantly say how tall they are. I guess sometimes their skirts are short bc they are also skinny (9th and 25th percentile)?!? But even if you look at the class height chart, the five year old is one of three kids her height, the rest of the class is a minimum of two inches taller.but ok, she's tall. 😜

@oliviaoblivia: oh yeah. When I had just my first, my mommy friends would post things on FB or would mention things that would make me think our girl was behind! For example, "Oh, Stacy can already sing her ABCs" when they were like, newly 1. So I thought their child was perfectly singing the whole ABC song. And then many months later, I would heard their kid singing and it would be like, barely intelligible grunting in the general tune of the ABC song.

Now that I have my 2nd, I'm like--oh that's great!

@petitenoisette: I was like that with my first daughter. I was so excited for her to grow! With DD2 I feel like going up a size is mainly just a PITA (especially since she is 5 months and 23 lbs/ 27 inches so she is actually humongous and wears a size 18 month!)

YES! DD1's BFF's Mom is convinced our kids are the same size. And they're within a 2-3 inch height wise.. But my kid is a solid 5-10lbs heavier and always has been (which is a lot when they're 3)
I get it's because her kid had failure to thrive for the first six months, but it's bizarre when she's like "J wears a 4T now! Is A still in 3T?"
Aaaaaaaand I'm like "Err... A grew out of 3T like six months ago. She's wearing a 5 right now."

@Purpledaisy: I think there is this perception that big baby is healthier than a small baby. And also people just have different views on things. My son was born at 8lbs which isnt too huge but compared to DD who was just over 6lbs he seems like a giant,so I always think of him as big but then I know people who have 9 and 10lb babies... so I guess big means different things to different people

@wrkbrk: it doesn't annoy me now, however when she catches on and if it starts being a problem then i will get annoyed. I was small and so was my husband and I used to get so mad about people making comments when i was in elementary school (I was a late bloomer and am now tall but my husband has had these comments his whole life.)

@IRunForFun: Don't let the comments bother you (easy to say I know) but I used to respond back "doctors say she's healthy as can be, she's just small but growing well!" And that usually shut them up.

I have huge kids, and it's hard because always think they are older then they are. They also expect my husband to be a line backer and he's tall and skinny.

My 7 month old is out growing 12-18 month clothing and he's smaller then my first. It's such a pain when they grow so fast.

Not me, but a lot of people say *to* me that my son is big, yet his percentiles always seem pretty average, between 50th and 75th% for weight and height. I will agree with them that he is pretty strong though, so maybe that's what gives the impression that he is big.

There was a mom that had her daughter the same day as I had my son, so they were the exact same age. My son frankly dwarfs hers in size- he is pretty big- 99%ile in weight and 90th in length. And for some reason she had it in her mind that her child was so much bigger. She said in front of all the teachers, I can't believe how little he is compared to hers. All of the teachers looked at me like WTF? Not that I cared but it was just so strange.

@LuLu Mom: I feel like I'm going to be dealing with this a lot! DD is nearly 4 months and just really tiny. We haven't had her percentiles calculated since 2 months but I want to say she's probably below 5% in both height and weight. Everyone makes comments like, "Oh, she's brand new!" and the other day someone said "She must be a few weeks, right?" Nope, 16 weeks, but thanks. I am self conscious about it and stress about her weight gain though, so that colors things.

@Peasinapod: same here!! Lo2 looks huge to me even though she's totally average size because lo1 was so small.

I also wonder if she maybe has insecurities about her los siz? I had major supply issues with lo1 and had so much guilt and insecurity about her growth for so long (tbh I still worry and she's 3 and long past bfing!). I know I definitely talk about lo2 being chubby because I still worry about my supply even though so far it hasn't been a problem and her growth has been great

Size issues with babies are weird. My kid is 90% height and weight and we get comments all.the.time from friends, family, and most annoyingly - strangers! Literally cannot go out in public without at least one person stopping to say HOW OLD IS HE? ARE YOU SURE HE'S NOT TWO???? (when he was one, etc.).
It is very tiresome. I don't know what your friend's motivation is, but babies and size stuff - weird, I'm telling ya.
