That's just what you want to hear when you are pregnant! Eeek!

The majority of births are problem free, and luckily we have modern medicine to help when conditions develop.

My sister had full placenta previa and placenta accreta with her 2nd pregnancy. She had a scheduled CS at 37 weeks because of it. She did bleed a lot, but got a transfusion and is perfectly fine. With a happy and healthy 9mo baby boy. From what I understand, placenta accreta is very rare.

I know someone who died from Sudden Adult Death Syndrome. He literally just dropped dead. From a very quick Google search, I have ascertained that 325,000 die suddenly from this every year in America....... and 600 women die in childbirth. So you have a significantly higher chance of just dropping dead with no warning and for no apparent reason than you do of dying in childbirth. I'm not sure if this helps! :silly:

@Paddington10: my MIL had that with my BIL, both are alive today. I'm sorry you had to hear that, scary stuff!
She probably slipped up because she is grieving. This is why they do extra tests when you go post dates, and why they don't let people go over 42 weeks. And it's why they keep you in the hospital after birth to monitor. Modern medicine can save a lot of people that used to die in childbirth.

What an uncomfortable situation! But the fact remains that childbirth is no joke and there are serious complications that can be life threatening. But in the age of modern medicine, dying during childbirth is rare and not something I would stress over at all!

Wow that's really inappropriate and u comfortable! I mean I can't say dying during or after birth hasn't crossed my mind - they make you sign your life away and ask about advanced directives when you are admitted. But, it's pretty rare and modern medicine is pretty amazing. I generally try not to worry much about things outside my control - it's just a waste of energy. Step away from Google. You're way more likely to die in a car crash on your way to work than die in childbirth, and we don't google those stats like crazy people! ;) you'll be fine!

Agree with what @LINDSAYLOU: & @OLIVIAOBLIVIA: said. so thankful for modern medicine! Whenever anyone says things like, "Women have been birthing for 1000s of years, it's the most natural process in the world"; in my head I think, yes, but women have also been dying due to childbirth for 1000s of years.... as morbid as it sounds, it's true, modern medicine & prenatal care has done wonders for maternal & neonatal mortality.

Childbirth is serious business. Modern medicine gets a bad rap despite greatly improving maternal mortality.

One HB mom just safely delivered with a very severe case of placenta accreta.

That is frightening, and very sad. There definitely are risks with pregnancy. A close friend ended up with half of her face paralyzed when she was pregnant with her son. She looked like she'd had a stroke. The doctor told her it would probably go back to normal after she delivered, but there were no guarantees.

I work for a large organization (though in a very small sub-department) and this happened to the wife of one of our employees. I'd never met him, since he works in a different building and division, but I heard about it. I had just returned from maternity leave a couple weeks before, and it hit me hard. It still haunts me, to be honest. I know it's very rare, but definitely scary.

I'm sorry you we're put in that uncomfortable situation! Yes, bad things do happen and yes, childbirth can pose serious risks. But the chances of something that extreme happening are so slim. Most pregnancy conditions have well known warning signs and risk factors. Prenatal care appointments allow your ob or midwife to monitor any issues, follow up on concerns, and be well prepared for your labor and delivery.

I'm basically shivering while typing this. I went for a facial this afternoon and the facialist and I were just making small talk. I mentioned my pregnancy and she said that a good friend of hers died in childbirth. She then felt so awkward and began falling all over herself saying how I'd be fine but now I am...um...freaked out. The friend had placenta accreta (?) and bled to death. BLED TO DEATH. Yeah. Something like that happening has never even crossed my mind. I'm basically sitting her trying not to Google while thoroughly freaking out. And I am sorry to share this on a PREGNANCY board and I don't want to freak other people out but, well, maybe that's what this board is for, some support?? Ahh.
