@Phillybaby2013: check out wholesomebabyfood.momtastic.com (I think that's the link - it you can google it). They have tons of advice on when to start certain foods including pre-6 months.

@wheres_c: I hope I'm able to do the same for him. I figure if we start off good from day one will be better in the long run.

@hilsy85: I never really thought about it that way in regards to the allergies and consistency but it makes sense. I asked daycare today how he has been with his bottles there and he hasn't been giving them any trouble so I may keep an eye on him for a few more weeks before jumping in.

@Phillybaby2013: not at all! The early purees have the same consistency as rice cereal. The only reason many people start with rice cereal is because it's very unlikely to cause an allergic reaction. but there are plenty of purees like that too, like sweet potato, squash, and carrots.

@Phillybaby2013: I posted on your other thread, but we skipped rice cereal for the same reason as you, plus theres not a whole not of nutrition in there.

For me, I've struggled with weight in adulthood but I was always a slender child. I thank my parents for showing me good eating habits and hope to do the same for my child.

@oliviaoblivia: good point about watching the baby. I feel like there's more of a stigma now a days about when to start than there used to be considering most of our generation got cereal so early.

@mrsjyw: sounds like you have a quite the little eater on ur hands!

Is 5months too early to go right to purees? I'm anti rice cereal but was going to look into healthier options to try. I kind of hesitant on all this bc I've read that starting too soon can lead to obesity. I've had a weight problem my whole life and don't want my son to go through the same thing. I know that probably sounds crazy with him being so small but it's a fear of i have knowing what I've dealt with.

We started at 5.5 months because she was sooooo ready. Holding out until six months just felt mean. So much advice in the beginning says "watch your baby, not the clock". I feel with solids it should be "watch your baby, not the calendar." Nothing magical is going to happen at midnight the day LO turns six months.
My dd had been sitting unassisted since four months, grabbing at our food and STARING at us when we ate. I gave her a little and she gobbled it up. A week and a half later and she can put back a lot of food. I feel bad now knowing how much she wanted food and I just wasn't giving it to her.
She still nurses a ton too.

DS was ready early for solids too, we held out as long as possible and started at 5.5 months, and he hasn't pushed away anything yet! we skipped cereals/oatmeal and went straight to purees/modified BLW. he's just seven months now and has been eating breakfast and dinner, with a snack and sometimes lunch and still nurses 5x a day!

@zippylef: thanks for sharing! I looked through all the feeding boards and couldn't really find a similar situation so it's nice to hear from someone who can relate. Maybe we will do some experimenting soon!

@hilsy85: i thought of this too wondering if it really would make that much of a difference calorie wise but I don't feel like i have too many more options at this point. Most places I checked said 32oz (yikes!) is the average max for formula so i couldn't see giving much more than the 40 he's already eating!

@wheres_c: yea I guess there's only one way to find out! Although if he doesn't go for it I may just have to get better in art of distraction to hold us over.

my little one was like that at 5 mo, and by 5.5mo it was very obvious he was ready.
Although 6 months is recommended, they don't actually ingest much in the first few weeks, so I'd give it a shot.
Once you try it he will give you signs he's not ready if that is the case....(closing mouth, etc)

@zippylef: agreed! TBH the calories he gets from a few teaspoons of solids probably won't make THAT much of a difference in terms of filling him up more, but I think it's ok to try!

We had a similar situation. Our ped said that if your baby tops out over 40oz of formula in a day, to start solids. We ended up starting at 4 months with purees once a day (we skipped cereal).

It worked out well for us. We started purees at 4 months and then added in some BLW at 6 months. She's 14 months now and is a good eater, not overweight, etc.

I think recommendations are all well and good, but YOU know whats best for your baby. Follow your gut. If it says to start a little food, do it.

B is going to be 5mo next week and even though I want to wait till he's 6mo to start solids I'm wondering if I should start him on cereal or try to wait. He's been FF since 8weeks and currently eats 5 8oz bottles/day but has become more fussy before and after eating. We only moved him up from 6oz bottles a few weeks ago bc he was hungry. Now he screams if you don't give him the bottle fast enough and will fuss and stare at the empty bottle if it's on the table next to us and try to grab it. I know he would definitely eat more if I gave it to him but I think he's just being greedy bc he's certainly not starving. He eats about every 3.5 hours.

I've read some of the when to start solids threads and I think he probably would be okay but I don't want to jump the gun. Anyone with advice or thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
