Even if you just took temp jobs or per diem work, that would provide some additional income. The specifics of your husband’s job SUCK and it sounds like the employer should be reported; but if your husband is killing himself to work more than 60 hours a week at any job and you can’t make ends come close to meeting, you definitely need some other changes to take place, outside of how good/bad his employer is. 6-12 more months on furlough (with no guarantee that there won’t be further furloughs, budget cuts, whatever) is a long, long time to live in such stressful conditions. I don’t mean this to sound mean, just realistic. No one got any breaks, we all worked 13 hour shifts, and we made well under minimum wage. I reported them to the commission normes du travail (I was in Quebec at the time) and I found that many complaints had already been filed (unsurprisingly). This guy wasn't just screwing over his employees, he was also not declaring income and his workers and avoiding taxes too! Amazingly though nothing ever happened and that restaurant is open to this day. Looking for new options is doing just that, not being reckless. Look into moving. Look into new jobs. Look into hospitals. Report OSHA. What would likely happen would be a list of fines to pay (which are usually huge) , changes to make by a deadline, and repeat visits by the inspector to be sure things are as they should be.</p> <p> And no business owner wants to deal with them and it's always a giant pain in the ass (and a lot of money), so it's always a safe bet to get things fixed. </p> <p>But if you call, be sure your husband tells absolutely no one. While it's not legal for them to fire him, they can find a way to make work even more miserable. And some other employees may even get pissed about it. I'd insist to stay anonymous if you call because some inspectors are dumb and will accidentally release who made the call. Just do it. I hate when people treat employees like crap. </p>
