I take a pillow and wedge it between the headboard and bed to make a bumper, just push it in really well so it doesn't flop over. We just had the same issue but because he is 1 1/2 we were able to put pillows in the crib to make it softer. :( At that age, we just brought him in bed with us. No other real suggestions but sorry you are dealing with it. I was just way too aware of her to fall into a very deep sleep. I was more concerned about pillows or blankets, but by 6 months I felt a little more OK. Not sure how your LO would be, but C always had to be snuggled RIGHT up to me, so I'd scoot back for a little space and she would scoot right back up to me.
