My DS was like that for naps when he was B's age and younger. He would do one very short catnap for the whole day, but he was also NOT STTN, not at all. I was a zombie.

What time does he wake up? I totally agree with @JoyfulKiwi about starting the 1st nap early. When he was about 5 months old, I think DS would wake up in the morning around 7 and I would put him down for a nap around 8:30 or 9 and it really helped and it also made a lunch time nap possible, and sometimes even a late afternoon nap. A lot of other mom's advised me that sleep begets sleep, so once he got into a rhythm, it was much easier to have him nap and stay asleep longer than 20 minutes. Good luck!

@rahlyrah: I just wanted to empathize and commiserate with you. I have been trying since K was about B's age, to get better naps and I still struggle. At that age she would have days like that with just 25 min. naps or a few even shorter catnaps here and there. I feel for you. Not sure if this is a positive, but now with all my attempts at nap training, K now NEEDS to nap more or she'll get fussy. So I am getting longer naps the older she gets. i.e. 25 min, 45 min., 35 min.

At B's age, baby-wearing was a surefire way to get a nap, if not just walking around in the stroller.

@rahlyrah: Ugh! Welly still isn't on a regular nap schedule but usually naps 2x day (at home - daycare is another story!). I agree with @jofylkiwi and @silva. For his morning nap if I put him down no later than 2 hours after wake-up it's usually smooth sailing for the rest of the day. Usually ...

F was a sleep fighter too. Our pediatrician said he needed to go down for his first nap at 1.5 hours after waking up. That helped us a lot. She said time in between naps lengthens as the day goes on. I also 2nd an earlier bedtime.

@lawbee11: I try to let him fuss but it often turns into full-on crying, tears and all!

@heartonastring: I will check out that site. Thanks! Maybe we need to make his bed time earlier.

@rahlyrah: hmmm. When does he take his first nap? I found that the first nap of the day really sets the mood for the rest of the day. My daughter can barely make it 90 minutes before she needs her first nap.

Is he overtired? Nine hours at night probably isn't enough (I think 11-12 is ideal). Try the Baby Sleep Site. They have FANTASTIC info on everything from schedules, to naps, to nighttime sleep.

Do you let him fuss? I don't know how you feel about that, but sometimes M gets overtired and I have to let her fuss a little before she'll fall asleep. If she's full-on crying I will get her, but she usually just fusses for a few minutes then passes out.

@Silva: I try to nurse, bounce, rock, etc. He fights everything! He is clearly over-tired but forces his eyes back open. I don't get it.

What do you try to get him to sleep? My daughter has to be put to sleep or she won't go. I nurse her to sleep, go for as drive or walk, or wear her every two hours to make sure she gets enough sleep. 9 hours doesn't sound like enough to me....but who knows? Does he seem overtired?

B is 4 months old and typically only naps once during the day. The only exception is if he is in the car. He gets tired, cranky, and clearly ready for a nap but fights it to the death!

It is 4pm right now. B woke up at 7:30. He has had one 25 minute nap all day. ALL DAY!

I keep trying to explain to him that babies are supposed to nap but he ignores my advice

He STTN with no wake ups, so he is at least getting 9ish hours of sleep then, but that can't be enough, right?!

Help!
