We did decide to go to a near by shelter just to see what their process is like and how long it takes to bring and animal home. Getting over the loss of a pet is still much easier than getting over the loss of a person. </p> <p>Still, it must be tough having to see little children cry over their lost companion. :( As PPs have suggested, getting another pet will ease their pain. (Spoiler: The tenth thing is that Barney makes the flowers grow. 'And that's a pretty nice job for a cat.') The thing is that I feel like small children need some certainty when grieving and 'Barney' briefly raises the question 'Does Heaven exist?' I understand what the author is doing there, but it isn't a rigorous discussion of the subject at all, and the death of a loved one or pet isn't, in my view, the right time to challenge a little child's ideas on that subject. Doubt is something that is naturally occurring and the treatment of it in 'Barney' is superficial. (Also there are some digs at the advocate of heaven that I think are wholly inappropriate.)</p> <p>I'm really sorry for your loss.
